Lol at b@@locks. You checked the battery, sounds like its struggling

pandaman 18 March 2014 10:54 AM

Hello, I suppose its time to introduce my self, Thanks Steve for posting this on my behalf.

The car has always been a slow starter, I have had it for a few days now and I honestly didn't think it was going to start first time I saw it as it had been sat in a garage and not moved for some time.
Its got better but this morning it wouldn't fire first turn of the key, second time it fired instantly

The standing voltage of the battery is 12.65.

Ill charge up the battery this morning and see if that makes a difference to the start.

Thanks all,

This is after a hour on charge, still seems slow to fire?

imprezaworks 18 March 2014 01:07 PM

Mmmm. How old is the battery, or should i say does it look old?. On a seperate note, what exhaust have you got, sounds nice :)

Tbh an hours charge isnt much

alcazar 18 March 2014 01:10 PM

Nope. mine is like that.

And mine has just had a huge fuel leak which emptied all the fuel pipes and it STILL went first turn once they were replaced.

Also, a one hour charge isn't much. I generally give mine 24 hrs. if it's low.

pandaman 18 March 2014 01:15 PM

Battery looks newish, but I think its been aloud to sit low for a few months.

It did seem to start quicker and turn over faster after charge, ill take it off later and leave it charge overnight.

I normally leave them a lot longer but I wanted to see if it was deff battery related

imprezaworks 18 March 2014 01:20 PM

Yep leave it on charge overnight. Its free and may sort the issue

Exhaust?

pandaman 18 March 2014 01:24 PM

Looks like a stock system to the back box, then its unmarked, no numbers ect the vid above ^ is the system

Im still finding my feet with the car to be fair, had many others but never a scooby

Looks good. Let us know how you get on ref the battery

johned 18 March 2014 02:56 PM

Go to your local tyre place or motorists shop that sells car batteries and ask them to test your battery with a drop tester then you will know the state of your battery.

r1c 18 March 2014 03:40 PM

Does it start ok when it's hot?

pandaman 18 March 2014 03:45 PM

Its still slow but yes it seems ok when warm

alcazar 18 March 2014 04:24 PM

Keep your foot clear of the throttle before starting, cold or warm. It can flood if you don't.

thunder8 18 March 2014 08:47 PM

the second video sounds like mine and my battery is bigger and more cranking amps than the one subaru say ..

sounds to me if its been sat a while evan though it looks new it could off dropped a cell, or not holding a charge ..

charge it up over night then try ,,if after a few days it still struggles try a new battery at about £50 from my local factors not sure where you are if the new battery goes flat or starts to struggle then you got something draining the battery besides the alarm .

some classics have dodgy earths in the engine bay area

r1c 19 March 2014 01:32 PM

Have you checked for any air leaks? I think it turns over fast enough to start!

pandaman 19 March 2014 03:34 PM

I have had the battery tested and the CCA was 99% of the battery spec, great voltage so they said its unlikely to be a battery issue.
I left it on a trickle charge last night and cleaned some earth points up, cleaned the boost solenoid and checked the coil packs for damage as well as having a general tidy up in the engine bay area

Started fine this morning :

Ill keep an eye on it..

Cold start issue - YouTube

This happened to my MY00 last month, worked fine one Friday morning, went to work, car was lumpy 8 hours later when I went to drive home. Sunday evening car would not start just kept turning over like yours. Suspected it was flooded so left it until Monday and no change. Got towed to the garage where they changed the Cam and crank sensors still no joy, changed the plugs which were black and wet so it was flooded and running rich. Also the plug gap was to big. After changing the plugs and sensors it started first time. Not had a problem with it since and it also starts a lot better in the cold with the new sensors.

pandaman 19 March 2014 04:40 PM

What plug and gap is recommended for these? ill get a set ordered in just to be sure

Wurzel 19 March 2014 05:04 PM

Sorry mate can't help there.

swaynie 19 March 2014 09:21 PM

0.7mm I think

pandaman 23 March 2014 10:13 AM

Well, it properly wont start now.
Im getting fuel, its got new correctly gapped plugs, the fuel pump primes. It just turns over and over with no firing.
Run absolutely fine all day yesterday, it seems its more cold start related than a hot start issue.

pandaman 23 March 2014 04:09 PM

This is doing my head in, I have had it started a number of times this morning all fine, then with out even taking the key out of the ignition after a short drive it refuses to start again

pandaman 23 March 2014 07:59 PM

For any one still following this, Intermittent cam phase sensor we believe now thanks to the ECU finally flagging a error.
AA man decided it wasent but im happy to go with the ECU on this one.

Also, cam phase sensor just sheerad off in the block, yey

imprezaworks 23 March 2014 08:47 PM

So hopefuly buy a replacement sensor and fit?

pandaman 24 March 2014 03:48 PM
