Got a new TV today
 

We'll I wanted one for the bedroom so I did the usual research and it was between panasonics e6b and sony new 700 range both 32inch.

I eventually went for the sony, as it's very new and has the better features

Must admit after setting it up the picture it's fantastic and apps and movie streaming is very good.

Anyway whilst I was in the shop they had all the new 4k which I have to say look pin sharp, they even had the largest one in the world from sharp 90 incher, but we all agreed the OLED from LG stole the show, that was super thin and crystal and bright

I,ll wait for them to come down, then have one....

One thing about the sony mind is it doesn't take a normal,bracket some proprietary crap,

we just bought a 55" 4k sony, the picture and sound is amazing

Nice set.... although seemingly wasted because of lack of software available at 4k resolution.

The industry suggests it won't be until 2016 that retail media will be for sale at that resolution.

What reasons did you decide on buying this set? - or was it a case of "I want the best" - which is quite acceptable of course! :D

You also have the issue around optimal distance from screen, where you get the full benefit of this native resolution (i.e. your eyes get the full potential of the increased resolution). On a 55" screen that's 3 FEET away @ 4K resolutions! lol

People tend to think that the higher the resolution the better, without appreciating the physical constraints of what your eyes will actually be able to see.

Great tv Farmer, I,ll challenge that distance with 4k I was touching it nearly and it was pin sharp lol, so great in my terrace house if I wasn't married

I saw that tv in the shop was awesome.

What I couldn't understand was the sony 84 was 15000 and the sharp 90 was 8000 sharp make a lot of the panels anyway please don't tell me it's sony name again....

That was meant to be 3ft or less. Being 3ft away from a 55" TV is pretty unrealistic, but pulls in to question the benefit of massive resolutions from anything below a 100"+ screen (under realistic viewing distances).

Of course.... most places wouldn't alert you to this when your getting your cash out of your pocket about to pay. :D

the difference in the picture between our old 50" hd tv and this new one is night and day and that's with me sitting in my armchair in the same place ?

Can you clarify the context of that and what sources you are comparing?

I'll put money on the fact that the 4k ability of your new set has no relevance on your differences experienced.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately it is rather poetic with it's statement on how it handles resolutions lower than 4k, which is not surprising. IMO this is the most important element of 4k sets as the majority of viewing (at the moment) will be of material drastically lower than 4k.

This TV will have to (as a minimum) upscale a lower resolution, although I suspect it processes the image as well. These two methods will worsen the picture quality over 1080p (or 720p) set being driven at it's native resolution (at source). Hence my surprise at your "night and day" comment.

The perception of a better picture is more than just resolution as we need to be sure of other factors being apples and apples. However, if both sets have the same abilities and the only difference were native resolution.... 1080p content on a 1080p screen will look better than 1080p content on a 4k screen. You can't beat like for like matching source and native target resolutions.
