Sanctions against Russia, impossible.

Gazpron, the Russian state gas company sponsors the champions league. A Russian owns Chelsea FC. Russians own lots of expensive houses in London.

If you get into bed with the devil........

I'll be surprised if there are any sanctions brought against Russia, as a nation we are too weak to fall out with anyone TBH.

Dirk Diggler 75 07 March 2014 10:32 PM

If any sanctions are imposed the Russians will just turn the gas off and also default on any loan repayments pushing the US towards a downturn in there economy ...

dpb 07 March 2014 10:40 PM

Wouldn't be pushing up property prices anymore though!

European dependency on Russian gas.

David Lock 08 March 2014 12:45 PM

Ukraine owe Russia 1.5 billion (dollars?) for unpaid gas bills. So EC will end up giving/loaning Ukraine the money to pay Russia off.

Makes my gas bill look quite modest :thumb:

The US shale gas boom has reduced their dependency on importing energy. The UK needs to start producing it's own shale gas to avoid this dependency we have on importing energy.

Well I don't see Putin going any further

Blumin yanks demanding irrelevant sanctions to up the ante

David Lock 19 March 2014 12:51 PM

Russia's economy if faltering at the moment and they depend on funds from gas they sell.

Now there is a glut of gas in Europe at the moment because of the warm winter and summer on the way. So if we had any balls we would threaten to stop paying for Russian gas and see how Moscow reacts as loss of income could bring Putin down.

Perhaps the yanks could help by shipping over gas (can you ship gas?).

Hague was very cross last night, but that is as far as it will go!

jonc 19 March 2014 03:18 PM

Best we start fracking for our own gas!

I'm sure Crimea's 'Anschluss' will be Mr Hitl, sorry, Putin's final territorial demand in Europ, er, Ukraine, to coin a phrase.

I want Normandy and Calais back. Perhaps we should invade them and then hold a vote?

boomer 20 March 2014 10:58 PM

Here's a thought - so Obama "ups the ante" and implements (along with the EU, obviously) lots of sanctions.

So Putin, rather than turning off the gas (a pretty obvious move, but probably pointless as winter is over - but a good one to bank) says - "ok, so we will only allow Russians on the Soyuz shuttle to the International Space Station".

As Merka stopped the Space Shuttle a few years ago, they totally rely on the Ruskies to provide transport to and from the ISS.

That will be one big, international, humble pie that the Merkins will have to chew on!
