A sorry tale of an accident with an uninsured driver!

Beggars belief

This guy should take his story to the press. I'm sure the Daily Mail would like a something like that.

Same sort of thing happened to me back in 2002 in my 5 month old sti when an uninsured driver in a Golf GTi decided to lose control of his car on the A465 and spin then launch his car onto the central reservation just missing us as we went passed. We would have had a 140mph impact had we connected and mst probably been killed.

The crap he flicked up from the central res with his front wheels caused 2.5k worth of damage to my car. He was uninsured. Police were no help whatsoever.

I had legal cover so pursued him through the courts as a matter of principle. This took 2 years where he was found to be at fault and was ordered to repay me the money for my excess and the costs involved by my insurers. I had the last payment from him in Dec 2013 as he claimed to be skint so was told to pay in monthly installments.

Those that drive with no insurance should not only be prosecuted (he wasn't) but their car taken from them and crushed (it wasn't either).

I was hit by an uninsured pizza delivery driver about 10 years ago. My insurance company dealt with everything, collected my car and repaired it within a week or so. Mib paid out, didn't cost me a penny. And as far as I'm aware, it didn't affect my premiums at all.

The police are arseholes, plain and simple.

You were lucky to get anything. Guy broke into my car (found him in it), he did damage to my car when him and his mates squared up to me in front of witnesses. Police caught him after he ran away & got a signed confession. Took him to court, was awarded damages to cover the damage to vehicle, which as you say was due to be paid monthly. Without informing me, he appealed and my damages were dismissed. Never got a single penny! Gotta love our justice system.

Was the Fiesta driver uninsured or am I reading the wrong link?

See it now on another page. At least he knows where he lives.

jonc 25 February 2014 03:29 PM

He has a point, what is the point of getting insurance, MOT and a licence? We're paying hundreds and in some cases thousands every year for the privilege of making yourself an easy target for you to be traced, fined and prosecuted by the police.

DYK 25 February 2014 04:43 PM

Its also alarming drivers who have passed a test, and don't know basic driving/Highway Code..
Theory test/hazard perception seems to of done a lot good hasn't it...

The worst thing about this story is that I would have expected nothing other than what the C55 owner described. How sad is that?

mart360 25 February 2014 08:12 PM

No such thing as uninsured drivers these days ...

Your premiums have a weighting in them to fund a pool for this eventuality.

you claim of this pool in the eventuality of it happening..

On the one hand, everyone wants uninsured drivers off the roads, BUT:

A white paper five years ago said the government could insure every driver in the UK third party only for as little as £80 per head...no more.

Anyone wanting extras, like FC, hire car etc, pays the insurance companies.

When's it starting? Oh...right...it's not....yet it works well in Australia.

Three years ago my lad's 8 month old Clio 197 sport was smashed off the road by an uninsured driver who failed to give way.

ONLY after we pressured the police did he get prosecuted, (the attending oficer sid he thought we should have left it alone....)

So...he gets done for DWDCA and no insurance.
Result: £195 fine and only FIVE points, so he didn't lose his license!

Meanwhile, my lad was stuck with a £700 excess and it took him well over a year to get it back. He was without a car for a total of six weeks. Got a loaner for two.

The kid who ran into him was driving about again while my lad was still off the road.

Police? CPS? Magistrates? SCUM!!!!

It mentions that he called the police & reported that the uninsured driver uses his car every day to take his kids to school. The police do nothing & say it is a civil matter.

Every police programme I have seen on TV shows police actively pursuing uninsured drivers & when caught having their cars taken away.

I'm confused.

A point he alludes to in the thread. It is very strange!

alcazar 26 February 2014 11:27 AM

Someone my wife works with was hit by an uninsured driver, police, *Humberside) wouldn't attend, they said it was a civil matter.

Maybe next time these auxilliary tax-gatherers and bully-boys ask for evidence of our insurance, we should ALL tell them, "It's a civil matter".
