Difficult 2nd to 1st gear change

Hi Guys,

I am a new owner of an 04 WRX. The car has recently had a new clutch fitted, but I wanted to know if it is normal to find that 1st gear cannot be selected when moving (very slowly from 2nd), ie rolling up to a junction? Is this a characteristic of the gearbox or has my synchromesh been mashed by the previous owner? All other gears shifts are smooth and glitch free!

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks
Jonny

When was the gearbox oil last changed ?
And how full is it ?

Bailey808 13 February 2014 04:50 PM

Not going to lie, I'm not sure. I didn't get many receipts with it. Is it easy to check? I was kind of hoping it was a normal thing with WRX gearboxes.

Easy to check pull dip stick have a look ( the one near the IC) think it should be checked when cold, changing the gear oil may help

dazsti72 13 February 2014 05:43 PM

I get that is cold weather.
I don't know if the oil thickens up in the cold.

I get it in this cold weather with my 6speed.

Gears dont' crunch or anything at speed, it's just second to first.

Some say change it for Castrol (can't remember the exact one) but it didn't do anything to mine and is still a difficult 'box until fully warmed up.

Redline shockproof is worse again in the cold..

Firstly, you shouldn't be changing from 2nd to 1st while rolling only once stopped.
And try a cold friction oil like millers crx75/90nt.

oilman 14 February 2014 09:03 AM

I would probably go for the Motul Gear 300 as it's thin when cold for a 75w-90 as well as being top quality stuff. The other oils mentioned are good oils, but a few people have mentioned cold shift issues at the moment with the Millers CRX 75w-90. As Dazsti72 said, Lightweight Shockproof isn't ideal when cold. The Castrol Universal 75w-90 is a decent semi-synthetic, but it is only a semi rather than full synthetic.

So it's not my synchro. It must be a common issue on these gearboxes.

Thanks oilman, I will give it a go and hopefully see some improvements.

Thanks for all your input guys. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't a problem with my gearbox/synchro.

I know, but it means I have to stop at every junction, unless I throttle it in 2nd. Thanks anyway!

No you dont. If you rolling at all leave it in second

nickc107 14 February 2014 07:45 PM

We had this on our classic
Cured it by changing the gearbox oil
Use Castrol syntax 75/90

nickc107 14 February 2014 07:46 PM

You can go from second to first if your just rolling but its ideal to stop first and carry on in second as above
