New computer - transfering files

I'm looking at changing to a new desktop as mine is now 8 or 9 years old
I have a few programs/ files which i'd want to keep but don't know how to transfer them to a new computer.
I have a Lotus organiser which i've been filling in for the 8 or 9 years so want to transfer this but when i try to copy + paste it to an external hard drive it pastes a new (empty) organiser with no content?
I thought if i used C+p sending it to the external along with any other files i could then plug it into the new computer and C+P it to that - shouldn't this work?

you may have export and import options from within Lotus organiser

So i would need to reintall lotus onto the new computer then export the file to my external hard drive then import it to the new computer?

Export the file to anywhere you can; USB stick, external hard disk, email attachment, CD etc.

Depends on the HDD,then you can plug this HDD to yours new desktop, although you will need reinstall drivers or you can buy external caddy for HDD which are cheap as chips
