Alcon Pro R, 365mm, 6 pots- Replacement discs & pads

I am thinking of pulling the trigger at last on a decent brake set up, in particular the Alcon Pro R 365mm, 6 pots Monoblock calipers with 2 piece floating discs & pads. I can get the whole fronts kit for £1400 new. (After selling my front Brembo setup for approx £400 it will only cost £1k........just trying to sell it to myself!! lol :D )

Only thought is that replacement pads are £250, but I have reads somewhere that Pagid pads are cheaper & may fit, is this so?

Also replacement Alcon 2 piece floating discs are £570 which is also a little steep, any alternatives? Do Godspeed etc do any?

Finally any other options in this price range & performance? (not looking for used kits). The only thing I can think of is the new 2013 design, D2 6 pot brake kit for almost same price. But though the new D2's have had very good reviews, I still feel the Alcons will be better quality?

Any ideas opinions welcome.

For road use D2's will be fine matey.

rickya 20 January 2014 05:16 PM

Forgot to mention mine will be for 90% track use only.
Those Scoobyclinic look good but are they their own make or D2/Ksport rebranded?

Tidgy 20 January 2014 05:20 PM

AP's then mate, simples ;)

not sure on the brand tbh

AS Performance 20 January 2014 05:26 PM

we can do various pads for those calipers incl. PFC, Pagid, Ferodo Racing, Mintex Racing, etc.........

jura11 20 January 2014 05:29 PM

Hi Ricky

Those 365mm not sure if they will fit under higher offset 18",I would suspect they will fit under 19" easily, but for yours needs I would go with D2 or K-Sport and good track pads like are PF(Performance Friction),not sure, but now D2/K-Sport are available with AP discs and they use AP pads too, speak with Alyn@AS Performance about the D2,I think he is dealer for D2 and other brands

Have run K-Sport and we are loved them, with right pads, you will love them

Thanks Alyn, will keep you in mind when the time comes :thumb:

Just did a little research on Nasioc where I know they are using Alcons more & it seems most aftermarket 18" rims will fit, especially Rotas (which I have for track use). My road/wet track 18" Prodrive GC05's should also fit, but if not I don't mind using 5mm spacers for road.

There might be more disc options as you say Jura as these Alcon ProR's are basically Alcon Extreme Advantage kits.

sonic93 20 January 2014 06:12 PM

See what alyn can do you on a set of aps rick ;)

Stock 18#s should fit under OEM 18s. See Don's WRX STi saloon :)

rickya 20 January 2014 06:26 PM

Thanks Fpan. :)

Will pm Alyn, thanks Rob :)

LUCKO 20 January 2014 06:40 PM

ive just purchased a set of 2011 sti alloys off a guy who was only selling as the Alcons would not fit on his car

unsure if this helps you

jura11 21 January 2014 04:02 AM

Hi Ricky

Personally I would go with AP 6pots and 355mm discs(with those you should be able to run 17") and you will be very happy with this combo on yours, just due spare parts for Alcon are dearer than for AP,pads are too dearer than for AP,which are better brakes,if you are looking on most of the track cars, then AP is mostly used and mostly preferred

Just due this above I would at least consider AP combo

AP all the way for track use

The 365's will fit with most 18's EXCEPT the Saloon OEM 18" wheels :cuckoo:

I'm running the 343's front and back as I wanted 17's for the winter :D:thumb:

AS Performance 21 January 2014 09:22 AM

the AP 355mm kit will not fit under std style/offset 17" wheels.........

it may fit if you have wide arches, low off-set wheels, etc. as in Jura's case

Ah, excuse my ignorance Don, I thought you had the 365s as they looked big :D

What was the car's balance when you had only the fronts fitted and after you fitted the rears compared with the OEM brakes?

I imagine the 365s will be like a huge wok then!

Just replacing the fronts, you could almost make it stand on its nose, with the rears as well, balance is restored and it just stops :D:thumb: somewhat quicker than with the STi Brembos

Agreed they're not fit under standard 17",but still I would choose them:thumb:

Under lower offset 17" they should fit easily as we run 356mm under 17"

Jura

sonic93 21 January 2014 05:57 PM

Same here 356 under 17 rota forces. Rick again aps man there the way forward. But track days I would look at ksports. Competing aps all day long unless your part of my team peasant motorsports lol.

rickya 21 January 2014 06:25 PM

Thanks for everyone's very helpful input so far :)

I am pretty sure now that the Alcon 365mm kit will definitely fit under my 18" Ray/Prodrive GC05's and Rota Torques which are both 43mm offset. Also that there are alternative pads available for these callipers and that they work pretty well.

After researching & pm from Alyn at AS performance I don't think I can get new AP 6 pot 356mm kit for anything like £1400. (The ProR Alcon 6pot, 356mm, monoblock kit RRP is £1800 but can get for £1400). The other option is 2013 D2 6 pots which also work out at £1400 too. So a toss up between these two kits I would really have to go for the Alcon Pro R's.

-Alcon/ProR brand is a known brand with proven performance, comparable to AP's
-RRP is actually £1800 and getting for £1400
-Lightweight Monoblock calipers
-Resale value of used Alcons will be more than D2's IMO

Well thats my theory anyway!!

sonic93 21 January 2014 07:05 PM

Alcons over d2/ksport for sure.
You shouldn't pay anything like 1400 for d2 surely? Ask Bren at apex.
Have you decided on pads?

Godspeed Brakes 21 January 2014 07:32 PM

If its a toss up between Alcon or D2's then it's Alcon all the way , leaps and bounds better quality.
I'm sure you'll find D2 or K sports cheaper than that ( they are both the same make with different names on )

rickya 21 January 2014 07:46 PM

Surprisingly the new 2013 D2 6pot calipers, once spec'd in 356mm with 2 piece floating discs and good pads work out to £1400. These are different to the old Ksport/D2 8 pots and have had favourable reviews on 22b.com and were tested by John Felstead.

Have already asked Bren on his thread on Scoobynet if there will be any discount or group buys on these new kit but have been told prices are fixed. Not sure if they are trying to clear old design 8pot stock first.

AS Performance 21 January 2014 08:54 PM

we have access to both Ksport & D2 if required at v.competitive prices over and above the more usual PFC / AP Racing / Brembo / etc.........

jura11 22 January 2014 02:47 AM

Agree with you Ricky about the new design of the D2 they're so much better from reports as per John Felstead testing

New D2 doesn't cost £1400 I would speak over here with Alyn@AS Performance or other D2 dealers

Those Alcons are new or used Ricky ?

What pads Alcons have fitted ?

Jura

rickya 22 January 2014 03:05 PM

If you spec the 2013 D2 356mm kit with the floating 2 piece discs then yes it does come to £1,400 inc delivery. Thats with their own std pads.

http://www.d2brakekits.co.uk/

AP's 6pots 355mm kit is close to £2k

The Alcons which normally retail for £1800 are on sale at £1,400 inc delivery. These are 360mm, 6 pot monoblock, with 2 piece floating discs and their own pads which seem quite good quality.

At these current price points, its a no brainer whch one to choose IMO.

johnfelstead 24 January 2014 09:39 PM

You do get what you pay for.

I would expect the more expensive brands will stand up to ageing better.

It's important if using these aftermarket kits in our winter road environments you clean any salt off the calipers, as the construction relies on steel plates attached to the alloy caliper bodies where the pads run, and these have a tendency to grow under the steel plate if you allow them to corrode.

That will have the effect of jamming the pad in the caliper reducing its efficiency. So give them a regular wash off if you are using them in winter and inspect them every so often.

You get this with the OEM Brembos too, but they seem to stand the salt better.

rickya 25 January 2014 02:15 PM

Thanks for the advice John :)
After a track day or winter period I usually clean off all road dirt & grime off my Tein Monoflex coilovers, then regrease and check all suspension bolts etc. Will add cleaning of the new calipers to the jobs list now.

AS Performance 26 January 2014 10:47 AM

brake systems in general should have a regular strip/clean IMO but definately more important with competition style calipers.......
