I had a flat this weekend so took the car to a nearby tyre fitter. Had the usual sucking of air through teeth followed by "You need a new tyre mate". He hadn't even found the cause of the puncture yet he could tell me that!! lol Took the car else where for a comparrison and they took the wheel off, found the offending screw (which was in the middle ridge) and fixed the puncture. Now the question is, do speed ratings of tyres make any difference to fixing a puncture or was the guy at the first garage telling a porky, as he said it would need a "special fix"??

My understanding is that as long as it's not on the sidewall or near to it you should be fine with a fix. If you push your car hard I'd play it safe and replace the tyre though.

I had Eagle F1's in 195/50/ZR15 for a 140mph Fiat Punto GT. I had punctures repaired lots of times as I used to work for a steel fabrication company and would often pick up pieces of metal in the tread.

Drove that car hard every day and never had a problem.

Thanks for the responses. I'll keep using the repaired tyre until worn out, no need to spend yet more money on the car!
