Hi all

Got an opportunity for a full STi exhaust system off of a Type 4 2 dr. scoob. I believe the backbox is ss with STi engraved in it and the rest is normal (can someone confirm this?)

Is the pipework a larger bore than normal and will it fit straight onto an MY94 2.0 Turbo?

Hope someone can clarify this for me,

Yes it will fit.
It is not a larger bore.

The midsection should be identical to yours ie with a Catalyst in it.A honeycomb type constuction which you will see when you look down the forward end of the mid section.

The back box is mild steel not stainless steel, with a stainless tail pipe with STi embossed in it.

However,
The STi5/6/P1 mid sections DO NOT have the catalyst in them and theoretically should give slightly more power.

Non of the exhausts give a great deal more power. Irespective of make.
They just sound like they are alot more powerful.

If you changed the headers (£1500) and the entire system, £700 + then yes there is some benefit.Plus a lot more noise.
You can gain 8/10BHP just by using 98.5 Ron Shell Optimax in preference to 95 Ron unleaded, and you don't need to inform the insurance company about that.

A down pipe mid section and back box MIGHT give you 10/15BHP if your lucky, but will set you back a LOT of money, + extra insurance.
On the road against a std Turbo Impreza there is sod all in it. ie you will not waste them.

For an example, astd P1 at a recent rolling road day, made 296 BHP, versus a full Scorpion equipped car with panel filter (£700's worth of mods) made 302BHP.!!!

£700+ for 6BHP at the flywheel. Or 4 bhp at the wheels divided by 4 = 1BHP per wheel.

I see what you're saying, and it makes a whole lot of sense. I guess the questions I should be asking are:

1) Does the STi backbox produce a nice exhaust note...
2) If not, rather than buy the whole STi system, which backbox produces a nice sound for a good price...?

The STi back box is not noisy,
A Scorpion back box, will sound well, and is not too expensive.
At least compared to several significantly overpriced popular back boxes regularly mentioned on here.

I bought my MY97 UK Turbo with an STi backbox on it. It is not noisy at all (a slight rumble can be heard from outside, but not much noise inside). I will be getting the Oval Magnex backbox next, much noisier.

I was under the impression that only cars built for EU had a cat in the centre section (P1 and 22B uk accepted). So the centre section of the STi exhaust shouldn't have a cat, just a silencer.
