Airboxes, MAFs and spluttering moan thread....

Searched for days now and following the purchase of a replacement non-genuine MAF I still have the same issues. (JDM 2002 STI 60k)

The issues occurred when I replaced the standard STI 7 airbox with a cone filter/pipe work (eBay special last week) which to be fair for the price was a small investment (£30) but now with the idle/irratic revimg/backfiring a bad investment! (Be warned all to tread this path!)

I'm about to replace the airbox with the new MAF to see if this resolves the issues but has led me to consider all of the other potential suspects..

Will update this thread when airbox replaced today however my next options appear to be..which to be fair a solid service is no bad thing and will do the gearbox and diff oils as matter of course, 10/50 fully synth perhaps not decided and not certain what previous owner used :-(

> Replace plugs (never had them out yet as the car is relatively new to me)
> Consider replacing coil packs (thoughts?)
> Cleaning the Forge BOV and reassembling
> Check vac hoses (ok or at least appear to be)
> Replace the generic 'new' MAF from eBay (£39) seen the Denso's for £110 so this whilst being considerably more than my £39 one a good option (if genuine I guess)

I'm assuming the Denso MAFs are more expensive due to their quality and a lesson learned there perhaps - off to swap this airbox now... The car has gone from a rocket to a concerning problem at the wrong time of year!

I need to stop the late night eBay searches for the moment.... When your car is running well... DONT mess with it! Lol

BOOM!!!!!!

Back to normal, 110% difference with the standard airbox.. Lesson learned!

Will pickup another MAF from Matt in any case.

Haha, amazing when they run well.... Induction kit sounded great too, not to worry

So is the standard air box tons better than a cone filter ?

daveyj 02 January 2014 07:26 PM

Mine was infinitely better once the tacky mock-carbon can was removed for good old ABS Plastic.

ScoobyFanatic33 02 January 2014 07:28 PM

It's amazing how much of a difference an air filter makes lol I'm still finding it hard to believe it really makes that much of a difference tbh

SCOOBYD00 02 January 2014 08:13 PM

Essentially, cone filter on.... bad revimg. Mis fires... Would not rev, boost.....

Airbox on and pulls like a train literally night and day, my car has been mapped so perhaps more prone to negatives when changing things. Shame as the sound was great but cannot deny it was a mistake, I would recommend mapping the car with the filter or going with a MAP sensor and aftermarket map.

Hopefully others will find this thread and be as happy as I am now having the car running as it should! astounded actually it made that much difference! :-)

110% I should take a vid for you tube before and after!

I thought the car had serious problems, back to the way it was now - MAF's don't mess with them!!!

ScoobyFanatic33 02 January 2014 08:17 PM

Can anyone recommend where to get a standard air box from ?

SCOOBYD00 02 January 2014 08:19 PM

Matt should be able to sort you out fella

SCOOBYD00 02 January 2014 08:20 PM

I wouldn't bother with a induction kit as you've experienced it's caused problems, stock air box is good enough with upgraded filter.
The air calculation is all wrong on ecu when you changed so going to run crap.
IK is only probably needed if you are going Fmic etc and even then it will need tweaking the ecu to compensate the airflow.
