New year, new project..
 

Hiya all, been contemplating for a while now whether to sell my classic on and buy a nice blob sti or keep it and spend the extra cash on some mods.

After much pondering I've decided I just can't say goodbye to my classic, having grown up watching Colin McRae thrash a classic round the welsh forest tracks they've been my favourites and always will be :)

So the car is a 1998 wrx import in white with a few basic mods and a remap running 300bhp and I love it.
But now the bottom end has gone..
So after more pondering and being tempted to get a 2.1 stroker built I've decided I don't require massive power so am going to get a newage sti bottom end and then build it up from that and then I'll still have some extra cash for other bits and pieces :thumb:

So my aim for power at the moment is around 360 as I'm planning to save up for a 6 speed for next year so hoping my box will be ok for 12 months on that power, I say 12 months but I only do about 2000 miles a year as its just a summer weekend toy :luxhello:

So far I've purchased a td05 20g and an ap racing clutch off Mattyb but still need to do some shopping :)

Need some advice on a few things, what front mount intercooler would you recommend for the power I'm aiming for?
Going to need some different injectors not sure where the best place to get those would be? Probably need sti pink ones at a guess?
Will need to source an induction kit of some sorts, any recommendations?

Also as I'm buying a short engine I'll be needing gaskets, headbolts, Cambelt kit kit, oils, plugs etc..

I am a mechanic so I know what I'm doing but will be needing help with things along the way :)

Hopefully some people will show an interest in my project :)

I achieved 375/352

Well I don't no to much but I had a classic well still got it in bits really it was running 340bhp it had a STI import v4 which I still have with as told when I brought it 17000 miles on it my spec was vf35 550 injectors fpr 255 Walbro and a jap speed front mount and headers and exhaust apexi ecu my 5 speed was ok at this power a although I did blow 3rd gear in the first box but the next one was good prob only got 340 due to turbo maxing out but your td05 should get you to your goal :thumb:hope this helps also I have all these parts for sale if you require anything as I'm going fully forged and heading for big hp:thumb:

Pipes were powder coated gloss black
Core was lightly painted black

Yes it's going to be big hope I get to finish it :rolleyes: I will have a build thread on it when I get it back front the roll cage guy he's only had it since August :wonder:although I said there's no rush but come on :rolleyes:

The 550 and front mount is the only things that have sold I have some 740 and two big front mounts one with pipes for front entry and one with no pipe but really big maybe to big? :thumb:

Ah ok that's a shame, yeah probably to big, don't require anything to special else for my power, just want a nice tidy set up really that fits well and looks the part :thumb:

Work on the car begins today :luxhello:
Going to start and remove front bumper etc ready for a FMIC (when i find one) and I'm going to pull the stupid roof scoop off, wish I'd done it when i bought it but i didn't want to ruin the paintwork at the time.

Probably going to need someone who's good at paint spraying in a few months to do the roof for me in the Herefordshire/Worcestershire area :thumb:

This could become a never ending project :)

It's a nice looking car so I'm not surprised you're keeping it. A 20G in a classic with the supporting mods will go like stink - I hope you've got upgraded brakes on your list of things to do:norty:

It's all looking good I started with a cheep track day car for £2500 6-7 years ago and now I have 3 scoobys and nearly £20,000 plus later and still building :thumb:

Is anyone aware if it's possible to buy a kit for all the bolts on the rear suspension? Would be nice to put it back together with nice shiny bolts :)

I'm getting a quote from Alyn at AS Performance when they're back next week for the strut bolts but I'm also looking for a zinc plater as once done they look like new anyway:thumb:

Zinc plating them is a good idea.. :thumb:

Next step of the journey today is to get the car outside and cover the underneath with traffic film remover and give it a good pressure wash off.

Going to get some spray on white stonechip to tidy all the underside up once the subframe and suspension is all removed :thumb:

Hopefully will get most of the suspension removed today ready for some powdercoating :norty:

Quick update, finished removing all the rear subframe etc today, came across some problems along the way but gt there eventually.
Got more work to do now as well, found a brake pipe hidden by the subframe which was really really rusty, strange as all the others are like new.
So I'm going to replace that now, also decided I'm going to remove my fuel filler neck and give that a refurb as it's looking a bit ropy.

If anyone is interested/reading my thread I've been trying to decide on best route for upgrading brakes..

What would you suggest as best value for money option, seen some brembo sets going for around £450.
Do these just bolt on to a classic or are there brackets required?

Thoughts and opinions please all :)

Update,got a few bits back from powdercoating today :)

Yeah that is the problem, but there is always a way around things :)

Quick update, purchased a set of Defi gauges on the weekend :norty:

The project gets bigger by the day, but I'm not complaining :norty:

Purchased a 2.1 stroker from a member on here so very excited about that :)
Also I now have a fmic a and a few other bits I needed, as well as some that I probably didn't :lol1:

Defi's arrived in the post the other day as well and they look superb

All going well so far, costing a fortune but that's the Subaru bug hey :thumb:
