Epic road trip - does this 2.5 WRX seem ok?

Flying from the Scottish Highlands to Devon on Saturday to pick this up. It's an 06 WRX SL with 42k, looks lovely. I have this video of it, does it seem OK? No strange noises? Few whining noises...is this normal?

the shreksta 22 December 2013 08:07 PM

so you will be driving it back then-from devon to scotland? ? ? and its a 2.5 ? ? ?

2 things.........

1-get break down cover

2-get saving for a rebuild

That's right, break it to him gently :D

The 2.5WRX engine is more prone to head gasket failiure than the 2.0L, but there are plenty around that have not suffered this fate. In STI form things are even worse so bear that in mind if you are looking to mod for more power.

Just be aware that it could happen and if it does you will need to find some cash to have the engine sorted!

forres77 22 December 2013 08:16 PM

This one is standard and will be staying that way. Just a bit concerned about the occasional high pitched whine in that clip. Sounds to me like an auxillary belt?

pflowers 22 December 2013 08:16 PM

Well at least you know reverse gear works :wonder:

forres77 22 December 2013 08:18 PM

Aye if all else fails I can reverse the 700 miles home

sweden 22 December 2013 08:19 PM

3. Take a set of new belts with you to change the one that is poorly adjusted and squeking

pflowers 22 December 2013 08:39 PM

How much are you paying for it?

MattyB1983 22 December 2013 08:43 PM

42K from new hey..

Just about ready for an engine rebuild then.....

forres77 22 December 2013 08:43 PM

Haven't agreed a price yet, and i'm yet to book my tickets

So does that sound like a loose belt/aligment issue?

forres77 22 December 2013 08:44 PM

Yes 42k, MOT history check and all the service receipts confirm this

pflowers 22 December 2013 08:45 PM

TBH the belt is an easy fix and of no concern, but if the seller can't even be bothered to do it when trying to sell the car it doesn't look good for the rest of his maintenance.

the shreksta 22 December 2013 08:45 PM

with the amount of 2.5's giving up i wouldnt even entertain the idea of owning 1 unless it had been rebuilt with uprated forged parts

ScoobyNoob79 22 December 2013 08:46 PM

It'll be an "epic" trip for sure...

it will be boring listening to the rac/aa guy for 700 miles :D

forres77 22 December 2013 08:48 PM

I'm guessing there's not much love for the 2.5 engine. I've read the stories of cannibal pistons etc, but the consensus seems to be don't modify the engine and it will be OK?

rubbish, there are plenty failing that are standard-there was a thread last week where one failed after 20k i think it was

Seriously you do need to factor in a rebuild when working out what to pay, it's a dilemma with a WRX because the car even mint with a forged motor can't be worth more than c £5k.

chrispy200+ 22 December 2013 08:55 PM

Not another 2.5 will blow up thread. Sure if you keep it standard, look after it and service it along with using correct fuel it'll be fine. However as has been said if they can't be bothered to fix the belt before recording it then rings bells.
Plenty about I'd imagine to not need to do the epic journey?

You only ever hear the bad stories though on forums, no one is going to go on saying my car didn't blow up today

thats because there is mainly bad stories of the 2.5,once rebuilt and forged it makes for a awesome fast road car but in standard form its like a ticking time bomb

would you drive one around without the thought of it failing in the back of your mind? ? ?

forres77 22 December 2013 09:07 PM

The reasons for road trip are

1) Scotland is ****e for choice when you are after a specific model & spec, there's hardly anyone up here
2) It's a March '06 car so cheaper tax band
3) The colour, SL spec, service history and owned by a bloke in his late 50s for 6 years who has averaged 4k a year

Believe me I wish it was round the corner but I will travel the country for the right car, done it a few times

the shreksta 22 December 2013 09:09 PM

i would sooner have a blob sti 2.0 for about the same price as what this will be going for

pflowers 22 December 2013 09:09 PM

So how much is it up for?

the shreksta 22 December 2013 09:11 PM

i would at least buy one from a specialist with a bit of warranty

Nice car but I hate blue cars, so you can imagine how much that narrows down my search for an Impreza lol

My 2.5 WRX is about to turn 108,000 mile on standard internal,
And happily does 100 miles a day Monday to Friday getting me to and from work....:thumb:

Just adding the other side of this for you.

pflowers 22 December 2013 09:20 PM

In the absence of an answer to my price question, factoring in the travelling costs etc I wouldn't pay more than £4k for it.;)
