Outlook Alternatives

I've just bought a new laptop and I had an old version of Office 2007 on an enterprise licence that I can't transfer to the new one (at least with ease) because the licence has been used. I've replaced a lot of it with OpenOffice but I'm looking for an alternative email handler that I can import my old PST file into.

Any suggestions:wonder:

Cheers

Jon

Time to move in to the future and use something cloud based like gmail, what it's your reason for trying to run a defunct email system? Or is it some sort of retro homage?

JackClark 10 December 2013 08:57 AM

http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/outlook/

It's only £109 LOL

Thunderbird is no longer supported, everything else I've looked at for a client is awful.

Total Cost of Ownership keeps rising with PC's.

Postbox is an awesome client, forgot it was available for Windows too.

That's not bad for a tenner. Doesn't support .pst file import though. In the past I've downloaded the Office trial then used that to export, that was on Mac though Windows may be different.

IIRC there is an extension to import .pst and most other formats: http://postbox-inc.com/extensions

I have a lot of stuff saved in folders on my Outlook which I still need to access. If I could import them into a cloud based email handler then great but I can only find info on exporting from webmail/cloud accounts and not info on how to import it back in.

.pst I'd be surprised. This might help http://www.mailstore.com/en/mailstore-home.aspx

If there isn't an extension just use a free pst -> csv convertor and import the csv, that will work.

Complete minefield. Pretty sure I installed the Outlook trial, added an account and imported the .pst file, added a Gmail account then drag and drop from the Outlook account to the Gmail account.

ScoobyNoob79 10 December 2013 10:22 AM

I've done pst > csv quite a few times, pretty straightforward. Infact, I've done a lot of stuff > csv lol

ScoobyNoob79 10 December 2013 10:27 AM

Infact, iirc, doesn't outlook have to ability to export to csv straight off rather than pst?

Export to csv then import, simples.

Attachments in a .csv file? Fine for contacts, not so great for email.

SwissTony 10 December 2013 12:23 PM

Outlook may well have the ability to export to .csv but it is only useful for contacts and calendars . I personally would never export mail to csv

If your place of work has signed up to Microsoft Home Use Program you can have the full Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus suite for £8.95. Bargain! :thumb:

Exporting to csv is a last ditch attempt if the OP cant import .pst.

That would be nice, and that's how I got my 2007 version, but they now longer sign up to this and instead suggest we buy the Home and Student version which does not include outlook:mad:

Scooby Soon! 10 December 2013 05:19 PM

Pretty sure you could use Imap to import all in to gmail or if you have apps you can use a specific program that google offer,

JackClark 10 December 2013 05:30 PM

Do as I did, install the trial, add a gmail account, open your .PST drag and drop the gmail account. I don't think there's an easier way. Microsoft are buggers.

Have your work moved to Office365 licensing for Office? That might explain why the home use is no longer available.

If so, your o355 license is good for 5 installations so you might be able to install office 2013 for nought.

I've still got an Outlook soft spot, even for managing cloud based mail.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Import_.pst_files

Pretty complete list of options you have, if you wanted to use Thunderbird... Some are also true for other clients.

Work is about to upgrade to Office 2010, but we lost the HU offer when they stopped buying a Microsoft Enterprise Licence and since May this year every new machine has it's own licence!!!!

I really do like my outlook as it is a file store in it's own right and a lot more intuitive than Explorer...

Outlook its still the best :)
