URGENT HELP NEEDED WITH HEADLIGHTS

Hi all, I took my car in for its MOT today and they failed it on headlight beam too high... they tried to adjust but they wouldn't adjust at all. when I use the automatic adjuster in the car they only move up and down a very small amount barely even noticeable, is there a problem with the adjusters? can they be fixed? if not where can I get a dirt cheap pair of standard lights asap please help not long before car runs out of MOT

car is a: 1998 S Reg impreza turbo 2000 AWD

Hi mate, my car also failed on this last week, mines a bugeye though, all I done for the min was cable tied the bottom of the lights to the chassis somewhere to pull them down a bit. Passed no problem.

MattyB1983 20 November 2013 05:16 PM

Try adjusting them manually on the back of the light.
Check the bulbs are fitted correctly.

alcazar 20 November 2013 05:19 PM

Yes, the manual adjustment needs doing first, the electrical adjust is minor.

Looking at the electrical adjusters, the vertical manual adjustment is by the screws pointing upwards. They have, IIRC, a 10mm hex head for a 10mm socket.

SCOTTIEDOO1990 20 November 2013 06:39 PM

tried adjusting with manual screws as did garage with no joy it doesn't seem to do anything :S I even tried removing the adjustors and greasing up the cogs inside still no joy :(

SCOTTIEDOO1990 20 November 2013 06:40 PM

also bulbs are fitted correctly that was first thing garage checked lol think they might just be fecked

Dan wrx 20 November 2013 06:44 PM

Cable ties, best things ever invented

SCOTTIEDOO1990 20 November 2013 06:45 PM

how can I cable tie?? not too sure how you mean to cable tie them down slightly

Dan wrx 20 November 2013 06:53 PM

Ok at the bottom of the lights there should be some sort of hole/bracket, stick a cable tie through the hole and find somewhere on the chassis near the light to tie it to, then pull cable tie tight, it will then pull the bottom of the light in towards the car if that makes sense. Like I say mines a bug eye but I have done this before on many cars,

alcazar 20 November 2013 07:18 PM

Nothing to tie it to on a classic, sorry.

Remove headlights, refit with washers under the upper mountings.

Dan wrx 20 November 2013 07:27 PM

Oh right sorry mate ignore my last few messages then, hope you get it sorted mate

SCOTTIEDOO1990 20 November 2013 08:26 PM

not a bad idea alcazar will try get that done tomorrow before the wheel bearing is replaced lol... hopefully that would lower the lights enough to get through the MOT :)

SCOTTIEDOO1990 20 November 2013 08:28 PM

thanks anyway dan... if I get another bugeye with this problem I know what to do ;)

alcazar 21 November 2013 09:46 AM

Out of interest, are these genuine Scoob lights, or aftermarket?

I've seen both, had two different genuine types on mine, never had a problem with either.

BLU 21 November 2013 09:49 AM

Sounds like the lens has popped of the ball on the adjuster to me!!

SCOTTIEDOO1990 21 November 2013 11:49 AM

yes they are genuine lights originals as far as I am aware... not sure if the ball has popped off the adjuster or not to be honest they felt pretty tight when I removed them to grease all the parts up and felt pretty tight when replacing not sure what it could be to be honest... might just get it down the garage and get them to play around with them and see if they can get them to adjust or bodge them in to lower the beam to get it through the MOT then I can worry about replacing them lol

alcazar 21 November 2013 12:42 PM

It might be the ball has come adrift.
Might be worth removing one from off the car, having a closer look.

SCOTTIEDOO1990 24 November 2013 02:57 PM

Hi all thanks for replies pulled lights out again today and managed to sort my problem I removed the adjustment screw again and tightened clockwise as far as I could then put adjustment screw back on and adjusted back up now lights are sitting about right but most importantly adjusting again now I can get it back in the garage for mot again :)

Dan wrx 24 November 2013 03:46 PM

Glad you got it sorted mate, nothing worse than having a nice motor in the garage and not being able to drive it

SCOTTIEDOO1990 24 November 2013 09:24 PM

it may well be a nice car lol... but I have to sell once MOT has been done :( misses doesn't like it too skip happy in the wet and she is a very nervous passenger and my aggressive driving style makes it a whole lot worse lol back to v6 Mondeo I suppose enjoyed the experience tho :P

Fudgey 24 November 2013 09:31 PM

Put some decent tyres on it, or just dont drive like a tool in the wet lol

SCOTTIEDOO1990 24 November 2013 09:35 PM

its got Pirelli all round :P and I am just an aggressive driver :D cant be helped just the way it is so car has to go £1500 if anyone interested :P 1998 s reg impreza turbo 2000 awd years ticket and taxed :P
