If you enjoy big engineering ...

...
is awesome

Pretty impressive. Wouldn't like to have done the structural drawings

Cool.

I have a client who, when he first became a client, was in Libya. He had to get out of their pretty quick when it all went to pot. His company based him in Egypt. He met someone, they have a 18 month old and Egypt goes to pot so they come to the UK.

He asks his contract manager for somewhere quiet - with his new family - manager replies "We are building the new sarcophagus for Chernobyl, you can go there"

The closer you get the quieter it gets ;)

Seems more thought and effort went building the sarcophagus than the reactor...

Yeah the new containment dome at Chernobyl is quite a structure. It is bigger than a catherdral and is being built off site. The plan is to slide it on rails to position over the reactor building. Nobody knows if it will work.

Or if there will be anyone left to push it :(

Will this addition become a new map on call of duty :)

If you enjoy really big engineering or need to dig quite a big hole, here's an example of some kit that we make crossing a road. It's not the quickest (1km/hr) but you wouldn't want to get in its way...

On the night one you can see an operators cabin near the wheel or the brave VW golf down below which gives you a bit of perspective. Just the 33,000 cubic meters per day :D

Parts of the reactor building are so contaminated you would get a lethal does within just a few seconds. Really Chernobyl and Fukushima just kill dead any arguments for nuclear power. Risks are potentially enormous and only calculable in hindsight.

This website may be of interest re Chernobyl - its by the daughter of one of the guys involved in the clean up and she was allowed access to the closed areas.

very spooky

I didn`t notice anyone with a burning lamp opening out holes that don`t line up. Pretty amazing considering the number of holes in the bolted plates.

CrisPDuk 14 November 2013 01:13 PM

Big holes, little bolts - Works every time :thumb:

I always find it impressive when they produce a piece of massive engineering. I can never quite picture how they gets all those enormous pieces in place.
