Hawkeye sti engine advice please

Hi gents

I am looking at buying a hawkeye wrx sti.

I have read the 2.5ltr engine are quite weak and unreliable.

I would like to know what parts I would need to make the engine safe and reliable, and the the approximate cost. I don't want massive bhp as this will be my everyday car just want to prevent engine failure.

I live in the north west

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum.

this will open the flood gates as ever on the chocolate 2.5

doing a quick search will give you the answers to this.

I have a WRX 2.5 just about to turn 105,000 mile on standard internal.

but I am also reminded it does not have enough power to pop itself:lol1:

apparently it should have popped thousands of miles ago, but no remap, small mods, intake and exhaust regular servicing its still going strong.

Forging is the way to go to make them strong, but I agree that they only really start to give problem when you start to extract additional power out of them with a few bolt on mods, but saying that I spoke to a 2.5 owner who had forged his engine and it seems that the map they leave the factory with ain't suppose to be to good either,if your looking long term I personally would forge a 2.5 before it decides to go Pete tong.SJ.

Price wise it's best to talk to engine builders who can give you a more accurate figure, they will proberly be a few along in a little while.SJ.

Thanks gents

Yeah I will be keeping the car just trying to factor in how much to forge the engine after purchase price.

I am guessing 3K. However you can change the cam belts for pretty much free, so that is a saving if that is going to be due.
Obviously if the clutch plate is gone, it will be a saving to replace that at this juncture - so maybe not so bad with these "savings".
Phone David at API is my advice.

I'm running a 2.5 with full decat and remap, at 340-350 ish and it's just dandy, it's done 50k now with no issues :thumb:

I have an RB320 that blew the HG 2 years ago. At the time was running 360bhp...

David at API rebuilt the engine with forged pistons, uprated arp studs, uprated gasket, all seals, cambelt and oils...

It should safely handle 430-450bhp now with no issues but as above if going for big power I would have the crank, rods and bearings done.

No need to replace the crank if it's not had a failure, depends how far you want to go with regards choice of components and future proofing.

It can cost as little as £2/2.5k or around £5/6k for all the bells and whistles.:thumb:
