Classic alloy panels

I'm of the understanding that the only alloy panel that is available for a classic is the bonnet? You get a lot of talk about lightweight panels, alloy boot lids etc but it's just internet crap as far as I know.

There's some guy on the subaru swap shop claiming that imports came with alloy wings, no airbags because they are heavy, small fuel tank (correct) to make the car lighter & alloy front arms to make it lighter....

My car is the same as his and mine has steel wings!

Let's clear this up for once and for all!

The Trooper 1815 27 October 2013 11:26 PM

Only the bonnets on the JDM classics are aluminium, Classics also had the alloy wishbones, Again JDM only. Classic RA's did without EW/CL/EM/AC/Airbags/ABS (but these could be added as required as options). The Newage cars are the same but some Spec's came with light weight glass.

Get him to go round a Scoob with a magnet, he'll be disappointed and a dick.

alloy bonnet and arms correct, no airbags pre 96 import correct. alloy wings etc bollox

Paulo P 27 October 2013 11:33 PM

That's exactly what I thought but I would be surprised if alloy arms are actually lighter than the steel ones fitted to UK cars!

Good information there but I now want to know what the steel lower arm weighs :D

That list could also do with the weight differences between TMIC & FMIC's :thumb:

The idea of the thread is to share the actual weights of the parts not to compare the weights of factory systems and aftermarket systems:thumb:

The standard steel wishbones are fookin heavy ! even if the alloy ones are marginal it's probably of more significance in terms of unsprung weight than say an alloy boot :) But if your car came fitted with steel wishbones it's not worth the effort fitting alloy ones just because they're alloy :) In an off you are more likely to drive home on a steel wishbone than a very much snapped alloy wishbone :)

The internet bollox about panels etc is exactly that :)

You heard it on subaru swap shop, enough said.....lol.....

codfather 28 October 2013 12:25 PM

Alloy bonnet was reserved for the sti's and ra's.

An alloy bonnet is a nice thing to have given it's of identical shape and a third of the weight :)

Either that or my memory isn't as good as I thought.

Kwik 28 October 2013 09:43 PM

I definately did the magnet test on my old WRX on boot and bonnet, one was ally, one was steel so must have been an aluminium bonnet.
