subaru turbo 200 air filter

hi people just a quick question when i brought a turbo 2000 the previous owner re mapped the ECU with a induction cone filter but i'm going to put a standard air box back on it an use a blue cosworth panel filter but will changing the air filter back to an airbox affect the car performance or mess up the re map on the ECU or make the air flow meter read differently or will putting an airbox back on the car make it run better?

probably a silly question but i'd rather be safe about anything i do to the car lol

Gambit 26 October 2013 02:10 PM

Maf will need rescaled. Do you know who it was mapped by?

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 02:12 PM

no he did say who he had it done by but he told me its got a TD05 turbo and it aint lol so probably hasn't been re mapped either lol what you mean by rescaling the maf sensor mate?

Gambit 26 October 2013 03:03 PM

Well if it aint mapped then just stick the airbox on it and work away.

If itd been mapped then would have been adjusted for increased air flow from induction kit

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 03:09 PM

ok well i'll find out if they ecu has been mapped from the previous owner if it has been can any mechanic adjust and decrease or increase the air flow from the induction or can only a mapper do it??

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 04:48 PM

Would it be easier to just buy a new air flow sensor???

dosn,t work like that buddy ...all controlled by ecu ..

do u have a boost gauge if so what psi or bar is it running ???? 13 to 14 psi is normal or if bar then 1 bar is normal...

what spec do you have like decat or sport cat ,exhaust, standard top mount or sti one or newage wrx is bigger or newage sti is evan bigger ..

also not to hijack the thread i have a airbox with green panel filter for sale ,in very good continion £15 + p & p if your interested as i gone front mount and can,t use airbox dew to pipes so treated my self to roger clarck £170 air filter.pm me if interested

get your spec up and pictures to lol we all like pictures on scooby net

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 06:24 PM

i've already brought an air box and air filter already mate and i havent got any gauges but it does have a PSI3 ECU data monitor which when i saw it i was like wow tells me everything like turbo boost psi, oil temp and pressure, water temp and lots more and when my dad drove the car home when on the power it was boosting at about 13.2 PSI so does that mean its had a remap if its boosting at 13.2 or is that standard???

and also the only mods i can see are bigger center and rear exhaust system with P1 back box and the cone air filter and instead of a black top mount which the turbo 2000 come standard with it has a silver top mount but soon im gonna get a front mount.
also has a forge dump valve

also when i get a front mount will i need to change the air filter back to an induction air filter or will a front mount intercooler be ok with a standard air box and upgraded panel filter

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 08:19 PM

Tbh mate it sounds like he didn't remap the ecu at all, so what i'm gonna do is put the standard air box back on with the cosworth air filter gonna do a full service including a new cambelt put a 255 walbro fuel pump in and go to a local remapping station which i think is jolly green monster and re map the ecu.
Then after should run perfect hopefully.
What do you think mate?

piehole1983 26 October 2013 08:24 PM

Maybe I missed it but what year is the car?

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 08:24 PM

1999

piehole1983 26 October 2013 08:33 PM

13psi/0.9bar would be about right for standard boost pressure then. I imagine if it had been mapped the boost would have been up around 16psi or so.

As for the front mount, I don't think it matters whether you have a standard air box or a cone but I think you'd get cooler air from the standard air box. The cooler, the better!

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 08:40 PM

Exactly cooler is definitely better that's why i'm not a fan of induction kits mate.

As for the air box do you think they will be a problem will the air flow sensor if i swap and put the standard air box back on now. because i was thinking if the previous owner didn't re map the engine then he probably didn't increase the part on the air flow sensor either but is there anyway of telling if he increased the part on the air flow sensor or does it sound like the previous owner did nothing apart from put a cone filter on the engine??

piehole1983 26 October 2013 08:50 PM

I have a tiny bit of experience with mapping myself as I DIY map my 97 Turbo 2000. The MAF sensor isn't touched at all. It's only a sensor that gives the ECU a varying signal depending in how much is passing through. There's no "target" to be changed like you can with boost, AFR and so on. Someone mentioned above about rescaling it, to me that's incorrect. That would only ruin the calibration of the sensor and would cause trouble.

Remapping these cars is more or less adjustments being made to boost, fuel and timing.

piehole1983 26 October 2013 08:50 PM

He's just stuck a cone on and talked sh1t to you!

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 08:56 PM

ok well thanks for all your help mate ill get that air box back on and i was just wondering when changing putting things like a front mount intercooler, bigger turbos or changing a full exhaust system or anything major in the engine do you have to re map the ecu every time??

piehole1983 26 October 2013 09:01 PM

Well any major mods or a lot of minor ones will probably need mapped. When I bought my car it had the following:

Decat up pipe
Decat downpipe
Blitz Nur Spec R system
Front mount
Turbosmart BOV
K&N Cone

All running on the standard ECU and not mapped at all. It ran fine but AFR's started to get a bit lean sometimes. This is what can create knock and kill your engine. But like I said, caused me no problems at all.

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 09:09 PM

ohh ok so what i was going to do was buy all the mods i wanna do to my car like:
TD05 turbo
front mount intercooler
3" exhaust system with sports cat
all blue silcione hoses
255 walbro fuel pump
GGR UPRATED Modified New Oil Pump
and put in 440cc injectors if my car hasn't got them already i was told 1999 onwards turbo 2000 have 440cc standard but still gonna get my mechanic to see if they are because 440cc are yellow i believe.

and put it all on the car in one day and re map it straight away and hopefully run 300+ bhp does this sounds like a good idea or should i take things slow and put mods on at different times???

piehole1983 26 October 2013 09:33 PM

No I think your right to do it all at once and then get it all set up at the same time. That all seems sensible, I think you'd be happy with the results :)

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 09:36 PM

yeah me too well thanks for your input mate you've been a right good help cheers

piehole1983 26 October 2013 09:43 PM

No probs at all :)

piehole1983 26 October 2013 09:44 PM

Oh and I'd stay around the 300 mark, the gearbox won't like any more than that depending how it was cared for in the past and how it'll be treated in the future ;)

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 09:47 PM

yeah I've been told that before so I'm going to put a stage 1 clutch with a lightened flywheel so hopefully that will deal with that sort of power i'm going to put into the engine just fine
cheers mate

piehole1983 26 October 2013 09:54 PM

Good luck mate. They're certainly a labour of love these things!

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 09:57 PM

cheers mate the blue subaru on your profile album cover looks well good mate what BHP it running mate??

piehole1983 26 October 2013 10:08 PM

Thanks mate :)

It's about 260 at the moment, it had been running more than that in a past life, in fact I have a printout of 297, but the bottom end went bang. My mate bought it as a non runner and had it rebuilt then I bought it in June. It had a silly manual boost controller that was set too high and a Superchips fuel cut defender (explains the bottom end failure). I've removed both of those and got the boost back to standard until I set the new ESL ECU up :)

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 10:12 PM

wow so are you going to put more power into it in the future or leave it as it is.

And i was going to get a manual boost controller before aswell but then i reed that if you set the boost to high the engine ends up going POP lol so i'm gonna leave the boost standard aswell lol

piehole1983 26 October 2013 10:17 PM

Don't fit a manual controller mate, not worth the risk. It'll end up running lean and start detonating like a champion. Bye bye big ends!

Keep it where it is until your done adding parts and then have it mapped :)

I'm gonna go to about 300 as well mate. I think my standard 380cc injectors are capable of it but I'd need to change my turbo and fuel pump. Both of them are 16 years old lol. I think a front entry TD05 and a Walbro is all I'll need. Even if I need injectors it still a cheap enough upgrade.

At first I was all about upgrading the engine but really we should all start with brakes and handling! No point having all this power and speed when we can't stop lol.

Coppin1991 26 October 2013 10:23 PM

exactly that's what i usually do to all my cars upgrade brakes suspension then you can do the power lol more safer that way plus my mate told me that he knew someone who had i standard 1.8 escort GTI and put a cosworth engine in it went racing on the streets and crashed straight into a roundabout because he couldn't stop in time so all that power is fun but if you can't stop at all what the point right!

piehole1983 26 October 2013 10:26 PM

Exactly lol! I near sh1t my trunks when I first got the impreza. Opened it up to see what it could do, then of course came the time to slow down and nothing happened!!! I had to fit 4 new discs, all new pads, rear calipers rebuilt and upgraded to 4 pots for the front. Even at that I still think the brakes could be better.
