Front Splitter Opinions

Just ordered a front splitter.... finally!

I have always wanted one but been put off by too many stories of them being torn off for one reason or another & some people saying they are on their 3rd one!

Anyway what are people's thoughts on leaving the splitter as it is, spraying it black with a matt, satin or gloss finish or spraying it the same colour as the car

CREWJ 24 October 2013 11:39 PM

Depends on the splitter.

Comboflip 24 October 2013 11:56 PM

Can you not get these made in rubber ?

Jacko4130 25 October 2013 08:31 AM

I'm on my 3rd , Garage broke it first time, I cracked it the 2nd time.

Grunty 25 October 2013 09:28 AM

I have a carbon fibre APR one on my hawk and some car parks are just a no go. Don't seem to have much other problems so far. I will cry if it gets broken because they dont appear to be cheap. It was on the car when I bought it.

imprezaworks 25 October 2013 09:35 AM

I'd like to get a nice new shiney one but as above they are expensive if they break. On the hunt for a second hand one.

Dan- 25 October 2013 11:02 AM

I'm still on my original one, I don't know what type of plastic Subaru used but I can't break it, everyday it gets battered by going up flat kerbs, speed bumps and car parks, I've had to re attach it a few time as it's pulled the bolts out but no cracks or splits!

A relatively high speed impact with a rabbit didn't even really do much damage, just pulled a bracket off, I am abit to scared to fit my carbon one though as I feel that won't be as strong!

Im on my fourth...two due to unruly garages, one due to a caravan sized speed bump in cornwall, and one due to my own incompetence as a driver :)

My first one was sprayed the same colour as the car, personally I think it looked the best. That one was fibre glass and took way more impacts than the HT Autos ones did before it broke, which is suprising as id imagine fibreglass to crack first

Looks similar to a PU splitter from HT Autos, they are very durable with it being so flexible. When you put the carbon one on you'll have to be careful, it'll be alot stronger than the PU splitter but on impact carbon is very brittle. I have the same splitter in carbon to put on our show car but im reluctant to put it on with me still using the car as a daily drive.

I bought the Blobeye STI in the Pic on the left and in the two years I had it went through two splitters.

I now have a hawkeye STI which I have had a year.

There was a splitter on it when I bought it which I killed.

I replaced it and killed that.

I am on my third.

The chap I had the car off went through 2 or 3 aswell.

So that's 5 spliiters I have been through personally. They are just too brittle. They need to be made out of some sort of rubber.

HT Autos must have a house in the caribbean - paid for by all of us constantly buying new splitters :)

It is certainly food for thought.

So convinced that I would kill the latest splitter in a matter of weeks i was seriously tempted to buy 2 and cut down the shipping costs.
In the end I only ordered 1 but I was tempted.

Gear Head 26 October 2013 08:14 AM

Depending on whether or not work give us a bonus this month, I was thinking of getting one from HT Autos. They transform the front end and hopefully it will be ok on my wrx which is running standard suspension.

wiley 26 October 2013 09:15 AM

a newage without a splitter doesnt look right, it needs one
HT autos is best, JM Carbon for carbon splitters

I have a splitter on my sti 05 currently just black plastic but would like it colour coded in black to match the car

Mine has prodrive springs and no problems whatsoever with clearance

:thumb: its no longer colour coded unfortunately, I split that one into three pieces  that one was a very expensive fibre glass one from Japan as well, felt awful taking it off and putting a standardised HT autos one on! Still it took way more knocks than an HT one before it gave up :)

Trinity 26 October 2013 10:15 AM

There is always the gloss black option, which is a lot cheaper than HT autos

or

2fast2cool sell splitters for £999.94!!!! must be made from cocaine.

Wakefield, just down the road. To be honest I wasn't overly enamoured with the HT Autos splitter either in fit or finish.

I was never impressed as the fittings were short in amount and crap, ended up spending an extra tenner on enough bolts, washers and some lock nuts. (this was after the first one worked its way loose on the stnadard nuts over a few months and started hanging off before being eaten by a speed bump!)

Pretty pricey at 120, but I know the time that goes in to things, and making the moulds are were the initial cost outlay etc but seeing these other ones coming out cheaper, maybe there will soon to be more options

Gear Head 27 October 2013 09:26 AM

That's a shame as I was looking to purchase one next month. Are they really that bad?

Trinity 27 October 2013 09:49 AM

I wouldnt say they there that bad, the fit ok and look ok

i just wasnt impressed not getting enough bolts, nor lock bolts at £120 and the finish on my last one was mottled in places and smooth in others, wasnt fantastic must admit, but ive never seen a genuine one to compare it to

Tony Harrington 27 October 2013 07:23 PM

Gone for the HT one & gonna get it strayed same colour as the car

SRSport 27 October 2013 07:47 PM

Click here and do it yourself. I did my rear GB270 skirt with an aerosol from these guys, they are pretty good, well compared to the likes of Halfords.

Nice link!

Anyone know where to get a good V5 STI splitter?

Moley 27 October 2013 09:17 PM

I'm on number 8 now, think I need to lift the cars height a bit!

Not a good idea if I'm to be honest. It will be stone chipped and scuffed in no time.

I dunno, the one in my photo above did 30k with barely a stone chip...the bonnet however, got stone chips. So use more paint than Subaru and hopefully you'll do fine :) or Maybe its just because I dont drive fast enough!

I would of gone for the cheaper pre-primered one on ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Subaru-Imp...item3cd2df3926

though if your colour coding, would of saved you needing to detexture and plasticise the HT Autos one, far less work and lots of money saved! Its what im doing next time.

imprezaworks 27 October 2013 10:40 PM

Anyone know of any black ones for a classic, or are they all in primar etc
