Introducing.... Geŕald the GTi

Purchased from eBay on a whim and a last minute bid won me this... a 1990 205 GTi 1.6 :) there's a few niggly bits wrong with it but not a bad little example!

I saw one of these when I was down in Cornwall a few weeks ago and they still look fantastic and turn heads  Cool car that :thumb:

fpan 09 October 2013 07:06 PM

Great cars, I've had 2 and should have never sold my first one.
Check the condition of the rear beam.

derek sti 09 October 2013 07:24 PM

Awsome little cars I've had one years ago would love another one although general build quality was crap a great handling little car .

jayallen 09 October 2013 07:35 PM

I had one of these on my short list before I opted for the Clio...Fun little cars.

bustaMOVEs 09 October 2013 07:37 PM

Brings me back to my first legal car 1.9, awesome.

Gavs blue scooby 09 October 2013 07:41 PM

I had a 1.9 with a T16 body kit on it

Gpowerfq400 09 October 2013 07:46 PM

If its clean hold onto it as these will fetch good money!!!

beef-on-the-bone 09 October 2013 07:47 PM

like that :)

JonMc 09 October 2013 07:49 PM

Nice, I fancy getting an old hot hatch again :norty:

mervil 09 October 2013 07:52 PM

It is a lot of fun :) I think it may have lost about 80% of its 108bhp it had from the factory but still goes pretty well ! Had it looked at and needs a few bits doing, 2 x wheel bearings, handbrake cable and new fuels lines underneath but runs sweet apart from that :)

First on the upgrade list will be the brakes... Godspeed discs and pads and a caliper refurb are on the cards! Theres a place in Bath who will refurb the seats which is cool... then I'll be refreshing the plastic trim and getting the rust sorted so hopefully it'll be in a better state soon :)

god I'm a big fan of the 205 gti. I'm on the hunt for another.

My last one I stupidly sold for £2500 was a Phase 2 1.6gti in cherry red, awesome little car.

Kwik 09 October 2013 08:08 PM

These take me back. My first car was the 1.6, then a GTi6, then a 1.9.

mervil 09 October 2013 08:11 PM

Rob, there are a few kicking about, this one was local and was a bargain ! And only £200 to insure on a fresh policy!

mickp 09 October 2013 08:19 PM

That takes me back. My 1.9 GTI is one of my favourite past cars. Great fun to drive.

gregwill 09 October 2013 08:20 PM

Noticed the last pic is taken down in Barry don't suppose you was driving it on Monday morning say around 8.30 not far from the Robert price there?? saw one that looks the spit of yours! nice lil motor you got there :thumb:

mervil 09 October 2013 08:22 PM

It was me yes mate :) I live in Barry !

Osimabu 09 October 2013 08:25 PM

You'll be on the lookout for one of the contemporary 160bhp 16V Peugeot or Citroen engines shortly I assume?

I so nearly bought a 1.9 GTi a few years ago, but I read something regarding 'high incidence of death' in the crash ratings on the HonestJohn site and it put me off a bit at the time. Still my favourite Peugeot though.

mervil 09 October 2013 08:34 PM

There was an Mi16 engine for sale on eBay local to me... was thinking about it :)

fpan 09 October 2013 08:43 PM

Stop talking about pugs guys as it makes me want another one! I really regret selling my first one.
One of the most fun cars I have had, on 90-degree corners I used to accelerate flat out in 2nd, steer suddenly while lifting off, the rear then pointed in the right direction, floor it and off you go :)
Mine had a few trick suspension bits though and was much more planted than a standard one but it still retained the ability to adjust your lines mid bend via the throttle in a predictable and repeatable manner.
Did I say it was immense fun? :D

TIZERBOY 09 October 2013 09:00 PM

Had two 1.9 GTI's loved em, what little pocket rockets in there day............

Thought it looked familiar, there a fair few scoobs going around there constantly seeing a classic with a black bonnet and I believe its a bugeye with a hawkeye front conversion don't suppose you own one of them? :norty:

mervil 09 October 2013 09:07 PM

Nope... I've got a white Type R with a roof vent :)

I know the blue classic with the black bonnet. .. not seen the Hawkeye'd Bug though :/

nyscooby 09 October 2013 09:13 PM

pure sh1te...... sorry.

blackvenom 09 October 2013 09:23 PM

Very nice! These have grown on me loads recently

fingerscooby 09 October 2013 09:56 PM

Looks a nice clean example, we have a Miami blue 205, limited edition, with a modified 1.9 engine, full leather, power steering etc which we are currently getting back on the road. Should be a fun little motor.

Cannon Fodder 09 October 2013 11:22 PM

Looking good Merv, I've always liked the 205 GTI's and I'll have a good look at the meet next week. :)

Hawkeye D 09 October 2013 11:40 PM

Looks like a nice genuine and honest example.

Good little find :thumb:
