Streaming using xbmc
Does anyone do this using a box connected direct to the tv.
I am looking at getting one for movies and sports as I am fed up paying for sky. I was looking at the The little black box. Thanks |
I use a Mac Mini as my media player with xbmc, probably a little extreme but my main PC packed up so it replaced it. Hdmi connection, 4 USB's for my external hard drives, wireless keyboard and track pad. It's silent in running and looks quite neet.

I use a Raspberry Pi and Xbian.

Just installed it on a laptop. How do I find all the sites and plugins is there something I can install?

I use it, I have got the Navi-x add on for sports & films

I'm running it on my pc, it can be a bit hit and miss for live streams but great for films. MashupTV and 1channel are 2 great add-ons.

The easiest way to add repoitories is like this

It all depends on what you already have, or are willing to buy.
I have an AppleTv 1st gen in the bedroom, it's running Openelec 3.2.1, which means it's basically XBMC. I've added in the PlexXBMC app so I can access media from my plex media server. Prior to this I had it connect to a shared drive on my mac in the basement and stream the media via that. It is also modified to have Broadcom CrysyalHD video card in it, that allows 1080p playback I have an AppleTV 3rd gen in the living room. It's setup to use PlexConnect (you run a script on a machine that can see your plex media server, and you change your DNS on the device to point to the machine running the script). This is devilishly clever, it intercepts the Trailers app and pretends to be a Plex client. Very handy! I also have an LG Blu Ray player, which can find DLNA servers, and my Plex Media Sever is setup as such, so this too can play media from there. My mac runs Plex Media Server, it simply talks to an external drive that hosts all my media. There are some NAS out there that can run Plex or other DLNA servers too. If apple allows "apps" on AppleTV and XBMC was one of them, that's what I would have used, but as they don't, that's why I'm going the Plex route. Works for me right now, but nothing to say Apple won't change things to stop it working (already happened once, but workaround was found) |
