98 turbo 2000 stock boost pressure?

Ive been searching high and low for the standard boost pressure of 1998 uk turbo 2000, some people are saying its 0.7bar some 0.8 some 0.9 and one guy said his runs at a bar standard, i got mine dynoed a couple of weeks ago with a turbo back exhaust, decat, filter and it made 233bhp @ 10 psi, ive got different sized mig welder tips instead of a pill off ebay to try and tweek the boost up but dont know what to set it too??? most people are saying its 0.9bar or 14psi but i think this is a bit much personally!
so far ive tryed 1.2mm as this is what ive read is standard size but it only boosted to about 8psi, then i tryed a 0.8mm and that boosted up to 14psi before i got scared and lifted my foot off so im gonna try a 1.0mm when it arrives im thinking 12psi should be pretty safe for my car what do you think??

Rob669 20 September 2013 07:39 PM

13.05 psi / 0.9 Bar

see http://www.scoobypedia.co.uk/index.p...stPressuresFAQ

Been asked millions of times before, but no worries.

do you know what size pill will achieve this ? there maybe something wrong with my car but ive tried 1.2mm what should be the right size and its only boosting 8psi

Personally I would not mess around with your boost your asking for trouble.

kirky1 20 September 2013 08:54 PM

i know thats why i want it to run at standard boost but if im getting 233bhp @ 10 psi and standard boost from what ive been told is 13psi then i could have a jdm engine in my car, that would explain why a 1.2mm pill is only getting me 8psi. jdms are suppose to be a 0.9mm pill and that would be about right i think if they're same standard boost pressure. dont know whats going on but in know i need to find the right amount of boost for what ever engine and map i have

The pill doesn't restrict the pressure, it only stops sudden boost spikes.

My 97 UK turbo 2000 is 0.9 bar standard boost pressure as well.

a jdm lump would have cdb? so will have the crosshatchings on the heads??

piehole1983 20 September 2013 11:32 PM

Plus the ECU and possibly wiring would have to have been changed to run the JDM engine.

ill have a look today but it seems a bit much 233bhp @ 10 psi doesnt it? the only mods i can see are a decat, exhaust and fitler. if i get it boosting to stock 13psi with a 0.9mm pill i would expect it to be around 250-260 bhp thats way more than it should be for a uk turbo thats why im a bit worried about setting it to 13psi

piehole1983 21 September 2013 08:41 AM

It does, yes. I'd suggest another power run on a different roller and a second boost gauge just to verify the one you have fitted is accurate. Cheap ones can be way off. Especially electronic ones.

Check what ECU you have by pulling the passenger side floor carpet back, remove the ECU kick plate and there'll be a big sticker on the outside of the ECU with two characters on it. For example, mine says 8S. That'll give you an indication of what your car is supposed to be doing as standard. It'll only take you 10 minutes and a 10mm socket.

kirky1 21 September 2013 09:36 AM

its got 8s on it but it looks like someones been in there before the bolts were loose when i took the plate off, how would i tell if its been chipped or modded?

piehole1983 21 September 2013 09:40 AM

Open the ECU casing to check for an add on board. It'll most likely be an ESL board as the 8S isn't mappable as standard and as far as I know ESL are the only company who made anything for 8S boards. There's only a couple of screws holding the metal lid on.

Rob669 21 September 2013 09:52 AM

Mine was running 10 psi and I had to change the boost solenoid to get it back up. Over £100 though :(

kirky1 21 September 2013 07:05 PM

i dont think theres anything different about the ecu i couldnt get the little screws out to look underneath the cover they were in to tight and my screwdiver was eating away at the metal and rounding them off so i gave up but they didnt look like they had been removed before, i can see some cross hatching on one of the cylinder heads tho kind of like the page of a maths book?

If its got a cdb how is it running through a standard 8s ecu? and how come they are more powerfull than standard ?what do you think my next steps should be? think im gonna get the boost set at 13psi then save up to get an esl map, what kind of power and boost pressure should i be looking to achieve?

piehole1983 21 September 2013 07:52 PM

Those heads are exactly the same as mine, I just had a look. I'm 99% sure mine are the standard UK Turbo heads. I'd also take a stab and say your ECU is a standard 8S as well, same as mine. My car makes 260bhp with a full decat blitz Nur spec and FMIC at standard 0.9bar boost. It's 211bhp or so in standard form as far as I remember.

I intend to buy an ESL board soon to make sure it's mapped properly. I've only had it a couple of months as a second car. I fitted a Zeitronix ZT2 to monitor AFR, exhaust temp, fuel pressure etc. I'm safe, for now!

Have a look at your turbo, I bet its a TD04. Again, normal for a UK classic.

A jdm engine isn't necessarily closed deck anyway. Only early ones are. Careful using mig tips as the size stamped on them isn't the size of the hole its the size of the wire intended to be used through it. So a 0.8 tip will be around 1mm for example. This is to give clearance for the mig wire. Your car should have a 1.2 pill fitted. So a 1.0mm mig tip should have around a 1.2mm hole.

kirky1 19 October 2013 06:20 PM

ive got a 0.9mm mig tip in at the moment but its boosting to 14-15 psi and i think i may be hitting fuel cut cus as soon as it reaches about 15psi it starts dropping back down, do you think thats safe or should i put a 1.0mm in?

jason_2013 22 October 2013 10:15 AM

Buy a 1.2 pill or a 1.2mm drill bit and redrill the mig tip. Too small a hole and the boost will creep up and hit fuel cut when flooring it in the higher gears. Too big a hole and it won't reach specified boost levels.
