Vegas March 2014
Going in for the first time next year.
6 lads aged 35 - 40 staying in the luxor for 4 nights Just after some doo's and dont's things to doo and see etc. |
Do:
Visit as many casinos as you can! Hire a convertable and drive around Red Rock Canyon and Grand Canyon West Point. Fremont Street at night. Las Vegas Premium Outlets centre south of the strip, get some Converse for $20! Good for souvenirs. Swimming pool(s) / Wet Republic at MGM Grand. If gambling, unless you like losing quickly it is better to do so at the cheaper places like Luxor, Excalibur, Flamingos, for the far cheaper table minimums. Don't: Pay for drinks, you get them for free (plus tip) if you are gambling. Do any organised tours, much more fun on your own in a Mustang! Play Roulette unless you can find European tables (one green zero), house edge is rediculous! Pay full price tickets for shows/events, use the ticket company on the strip on the day you want to go. |
Its all there on the Strip. You really won't need any guidance to find your way around it all.
Les :) |
Something to note - it won't be particularly hot then.... don't automatically expect shorts & T-Shirt - it can get pretty cold in Vegas at times... Enjoy.

I also don't agree with the free drinks comment when gambling. They don't exactly rush to get them to you, can be waiting half hour for a drink, if your lucky.

Cheapest place to eat is in a casino restaurant. Their prices are significantly cheaper to drag the punters in and are good quality too.
Les |
Why or earth would anybody want to go there
You might as well go down your local gala bingo / walmart/weatherspoons , don't worry its all inside |

We had a lovely meal in Caesars, but it wasn't cheap - $240. Cheapest place we found was Hooters, but its a bit of a dive. We stayed at the MGM, breakfast buffet was $70 for both of us, which I thought was pretty damn crazy to be honest. Cannot fault the quality of the food though like you say, and the service is fantastic. Can't wait to go back next year:thumb:
Since we were comparatively poorly paid RAF members we used to go to The Stardust for our meals. Can't remember what we paid now for a prime steak but it was all very good and a lot cheaper than eating in the USAF mess. Les :) |
The wife went some 10 years ago and remembered it being really cheap. She was shocked how much it had gone up. I also heard they have been struggling for a while now over there, so they have banged the prices up a fair whack.
|
Forgot to add...
Look out for the recently-introduced 'room tax' on top of your hotel room cost that many hotels are now imposing. I suspect Luxor will be doing this. The justification is that it pays for on-site amenities like free wifi, but it's a massive con that is unfortunately unavoidable, and usually payable when you check out. It's already commonplace in other parts of the US and has seeped into Vegas too, when I stayed at MGM last March it was about £80 per room for a week. Edit: here's a handy table: http://www.vegas.com/incl/resortfees.html |
I'm planning on going next year too.

We had a meal at the revolving restaurant in the top of the Stratosphere, its not cheap and you have to book (you can do it online from here!) but the food was great and the 'wine flight' with a full six courser well down well too - hahahaha:)

Massively overated place indeed!
|
Overated or not,it is worth seeing if you are there, you will always regret it if you miss it when you had the chance.

I reckon a £2g budget for the 4 days
Doing the Grand can helicopter tour and a gun range the rest will spent on, Casino and night clubs Dont think we will be booking places for meals, a bag of chips and burger here and there will do |

You might as well go down your local gala bingo / walmart/weatherspoons , don't worry its all inside Vegas is indescribable to be honest. You need to go and experience it! I am not a gambler or really a drinker and I am the last person to want to go and spend a night in a tacky casino..... but I have been three times and loved every minute of it!!! It's so over the top it's brilliant! By the way the free drinks while you gamble is true, but the better you tip the more attention you will get from your waiter/waitress.... if you tip like the usual mean spirirted Brit you will get more or less ignored, if you tip like a generous Yank you will get fantastic service all night. Interestingly waiting staff in the US (and other 'tipping' jobs) get taxed on 1.25 times their official earnings in some states as it is assumed this is the minimum they will be earning in tips ... and you thought HMRC were bad :lol1: |
Sounds like you're hooked
