Never understood why people don't drive to the conditions. The fog was pretty thick in parts of the south east this morning and yet there are reports of people driving without their lights on and not significantly reducing their speed.

Too many people just drive 80 mph and tailgate regardless of the conditions.

I'm trying hard not to be derogatory about Sheppeyites :lol1:

But, yep, the fog was very thick this morning. The way people drive on all parts of the A249 makes is no wonder this happened. First day of school traffic along with the fog and careless drivers was a recipe for carnage. The design of the bridge with no hard-shoulder is also no doubt a factor.

The amount of cars and lorries I saw (or rather, didn't) this morning was staggering.

Sheppy as in isle of sheppy, I bought my rover ti from there strange people and a strange car was sort of Kawasaki ninja green diy style lol and was described as a Scooby killer haha my mondeo v6 beat it in a drag race and a bendy road race too, I was young

As was said, why not drive according to the conditions. Its going to be very likely in fog like that for there to be a sudden stop on the cards which is a recipe for that kind of disaster if people are driving as though the weather was clear.

I see some terrible speedfreaks who simply want to show off on the road by overtaking sensible coaches like mine. I usually don't give a......... you know what I mean. But even fog, flood or snow- nothing matters to them. And yes, it is a common sense to go even slower than speed limit in conditions like that. If anyone tells me that going at slower than the snail's pace can also cause a hazard, I know that! Yet again, there are some show-offs with killer speed who have this need to win the race on public roads no matter what. They must have very low self esteem to have such need. Their motor keys should be taken off them, and thrown into the sea forever.

That new bridge wasn't even bulit when I used to live a few miles away over the mudflats, went over the small one in the foreground - unless it was up for river traffic.

Was there yesterday - although luckily not involved - we have an office about 1/2 mile from the sheppey end of the bridge....

The fog was as thick as a bag - really dense, and people were driving without lights:cuckoo: and really fast for the conditions.

One of our guys went over the bridge off sheppey about 30mins before it happened - he went over at 25mph - said he could barely see the end of his bonnet the fog was the worst he's ever seen - yet people were screaming past him at 70mph - he even said to himself - they're crazy, there's gonna be an accident on here.... 20mins later....:rolleyes:

I went past onto sheppey about 1 hour later - carnage everywhere - never seen so many police/ambulance/fire - god knows where they all came from - but they dealt with it very well:luxhello: - AND most impressively no major delays either.... amazingly.

Luckily the old road is still open - hundreds of people milling about at the bottom of the bridge all looking a bit dazed! unreal.

It must be something to do with the islander 'webbed feet' syndrome!

It was really foggy yesterday morning and as soon as I left my house at 8am for work, I hit traffic which never happens.

Ended up having to round the entire Island, just to get to work. (Queenborough)

Even heading through Sheerness, there were people driving without any lights on. :razz:

Looking to get off the island as soon as possible. Fed up with the place.
Minster is nice, where we live, but the rest of it is one big ****e hole.
Handy being just 3 miles from work though! :D

But driving to the "conditions" maybe the reason...............
