BMW 330D touring

My brother has 11,000 to spend. He fancies the above.Does anyone on here own one,is there anything to look out for? Which car is its main rival

My boss has one and it's been nothing but trouble, however it's a 2003 and he drives his cars hard so maybe it's been brought on by him.

He's had the gearbox go twice however if you get a newer one with the ZF box they're supposed to be fairly bombproof.

Essentially I think they are quite good cars but like all modern diesels have some fairly expensive weak points e.g. the DPF and the EGR system. The variable vane turbos can stick as well. A lot of it is down to how the car was driven, lots of short runs is bad as they'll be a lot of soot build up, long motorway runs are better as the car has a chance to get everything nice and hot, regenerate the DPF, etc.

11 k will get him the pre-face lift i would imagine. not as nice as the face lift imo. i have the 320d with lci idrive and its a nice drive. they chip well too. if he does get one make sure it has the obd recall done and to relocate the obd port.

I specifically avoided this option when looking for my five series as the drains on it are prone to blocking up and then filling your boot with water (and there's a load of electronics in the bottom of the spare wheel well ).

Might be okay on a 3 series though? Never seen the need for sunroofs myself since air conditioning became pretty much standard.

Our 335d Touring has the sunroof and it's absolutely brilliant. Tonnes of light and it does all sorts. Essential IMO; we've had ours 5 years without problems.

Currently got a 2006 (e90) 330d touring and its a brilliant car. Shame I have to sell it as I am no longer doing the long commute. It was getting 600 miles to a tank and 45mpg comfortably. I have the se and it its extremely comfortable. Cant go wrong with these cars!
