New car - BMW 335d Xdrive
Well, time has come to change my wife's car and we have gone for the BMW.
Slightly expensive (8k discount helped) for what it is but wanted; 4wd C.50mpg Around 5 seconds to 60 Mid size This didn't really leave much choice to be honest. Along the was test drove the M135i and really liked it but just a little small....great car though. |
Get it mapped... Torque monster :lol1:
|
I will run it in first :)
|
50 mpg :lol1:
You'll never see it unless you drive it like a granny :D Great engine in a great car ;) <---- |
MPG
50 MPG seems a tad optimistic, maybe on a run at 56 mph but get them turbos held on max and you will see more like around the high 20's early 30's max! My pal has one and whilst it is rapid in the dry, in the wet they are a bit skippy.
Get it remapped as the torque can hit 700+ NM!! hmmm sweet spot |
Car will spend most of its life on the motorway so won't be maxing the turbos :)
I appreciate that 50 is prob on the high side but mid 40s on a run. Way better than most cars with similar performance. Hopefully the 4wd will help with getting the power down. |
Lucky
You will love that engine and box..
|
Heard very little about the X-drive system in non SUV BMWs; keen to hear what you think!
There's a slip road onto the A30 where I've tested how long I can keep the traction light on; about five seconds so far! I enjoy playing with the back end though when no one is looking... Clearly ours is a lot older though. Will hopefully be in an M135i soonish. |
I really liked the 135i.... A lot! As a main car for us, it was just too small but great value for money and much fun to drive.
I was a 50/50 on the Xdrive to be honest as it doesn't get the M sport suspension. Went for adaptive which should help a little. At the end of the day, the wife preferred 4wd and it is her car for the next year until I ditch my company car. |
For some reason they don't do a 335d x drive in estate form, looks to be only saloon which is strange?
|
Cupra; we have a big VW camper for load lugging luckily.
Sounds really nice; looking forward to seeing pics! |
The 335d Xdrive saloon has only just come out so supsect the Estate will be along soon. I would have got that if out.
I have an 8 to 12 week wait for the car....nothing special really given its just a 3 series. Boring white with red leather - wanted the blue but not convinced it works with red leather and didn't want a black interior this time 19" inch alloys M sport brakes Prof nav Adaptive suspension Some other stuff as I got the m sport pack and visibility pack Bought mainly for the engine Ps been looking at the campervans recently! |

50mpg only if you do 56mph and huge journeys.
The old 2wd 335d get low 30's in reality despite the mpg claims. |
Nice. So glad they are adding X drive to RHD performance models.

Definitely consider an X-Drive model as and when I decide to move on from the current car but won't be for a few years yet. |

The mpg is not really what I wanted to hear but ordered now and it ticked the rest of the boxes :)
It's replacing an xtrail so will be no worse than that and a bit more fun to drive! |
That sounds like a great everyday practical car, that is understated and fast, and will cope with any snow we might get.
How did you get the big discount? |
There is a 5k dealer contribution the model (on the website) so that bit was pretty easy.
Just pushed for the rest given the extras were 5-6k (no xenon a as standard is sh1t) and got there in the end. Still think the car is a bit expensive for a 3 series to be honest but struggled to see anything which compared........though if the mpg is low 30s the S4 may have been more of an option that I thought |
I almost mentioned the S4 in my other post. They're meant to be quite good on fuel, considering they're petrol. But I doubt they are anywhere near their official figures.

what is the technology behind the X Drive system?
does it have a centre diff? is it electronic or mechanical? |
Got an E91 335d which I'm really happy with. The X drive version will probably be my next purchase,so I'd be really interested in a write up and some pics when you get it:thumb:

I had a 330d for a week the new 1, and the MPG is about right , i did motorway all week and it was great, not too far off the 520D i had the week before. bet it will fly and having 4WD will be good, i hated the rear wheel ****, even on my new E350 i hate it, always tractions control ,cant wait for the snow NOT. |

Just point and shoot - it does exactly what you tell it to do in a controlled, predictable way. My only reservations with the new one (and x drive) is that the electric assistance on the steering (mine has fully hydraulic) and the AWD system may dull the experience a little? But it will be damn quick and a lot of fun 99% of the time. |
I have a 335d and love it, off the line beats most things if you can get the traction down. had a 335d touring but felt like an old man driving it so bought a newer one with all the trimmings (well most of them). 39mpg on a short run down motorway but ive had 42/43 mpg a couple of times, but 50 is definetley pushing it
cheers mickyboy |
I guess the 4wd wont be for everyone. Works for us and the wife likes it so given its her car for the next year is her choice.
Reading some of the reviews (limited owner info as yet), seems 40mpg on a run is around the norm.... though that will be with a tight engine. 50mpg seems unlikely but we do 2/3rds of our driving on a quite motorway each day so should return at least that most days. Delivery date has slipped back a bit and is now start of November. |

I just ordered mine today, well I paid the deposit to book the build slot and I have 2 days to decide if I actually want it and what spec etc. I've been driving round in an older 335d but I really don't like the suspension being so hard and the steering is heavy. Yeah it's like a rocket in a straight line but I hate how it struggles for traction all the time. I've spec'd it out pretty well and the only thing I am not sure about is the adaptive suspension. The guy at the dealers can't really tell me anything as he hasn't driven a car with it which is no help. Anything you cal tell me would be a great help. cheers |
