Oil pressure light not working

Hi I've just had a cosworth baffled sump fitted to my classic my97 uk. I can't remember if the oil pressure light came on with the ignition key? The mechanic noticed it when he started it back up. Any ideas? Thanks.

it should come on with the rest of the lights as you start the car and go off when the engine is running and the pressure switch is happy.

Ok thanks. So why would it not come on after fitting a sump plate? Where is the oil pressure switch? The mechanic said he has not touched it as he doesn't know where it is. Is it safe to drive it with the light not coming on?

Oil pressure switch is at front/top of engine (under the alternator I think) - so would not be touched when fitting a sump plate.
Most likely the switch is bust, loose wire or light bulb burned out is my guess.

As above if you look down the left hand side of the alternator on top of the engine block you should be able to see the switch, Has a single black wire with a spade connector on it.

Do you have a pressure gauge fitted, Have you had the oil pressure checked?

I'm going to be fitting gauges in a few weeks so don't know what the pressure is just now. Will get a new sensor and check the wiring and bulb. Thanks.

The pressure light comes switches off at about 2 psi, so only comes on if the engine is not turning, you have no oil pump or you have no oil.
A pressure gauge will give you a lot more information, so I'd go for one of those if I were you.
Personally, I don't have one and I have tracked my car about twenty times.
I put my faith in Subaru's legendary bullet proof reliability.
Only had to pay for one rebuild so far which funnily enough was down to a cracked oil pick up pipe in the sump.
