Air Scoop - Why?

As not having driven/owned a car with a turbo, I've a non turbo impreza, what makes the WRX & the STI's a special breeed that they need an air scoop compared to other makes that have turbos, such as the modern day Ford ST's, or elderly Renault 5 turbos & the like?

Mick 18 July 2013 07:56 PM

Top mounted intercoolers... The scoop directs air though the intercooler mounted above the engine :)

RedScoob 18 July 2013 07:56 PM

Top mounted intercooler. Scoop is the best way to get air in.

fergal69 18 July 2013 07:59 PM

I know the Impreza's have a top mounted intercooler, but do other makes have intercoolers, or are they set up in such a way that there is no need for them? Or are they at the front of the engine behind the grill & have no need for a seperate intake?

RedScoob 18 July 2013 08:01 PM

Yes.

tubbytommy 18 July 2013 08:18 PM

jesus....................seriously

Oh dear...

Rob Day 18 July 2013 08:57 PM

Lol. Give him chance, he's asked the question sensibly.

robs right give the fella a chance.. i was cluless once about subarus.. and nothing has changed still clueless.. lol

blackvenom 18 July 2013 09:14 PM

Most cars have small intercoolers mounted beside the front bumpers, due to the engine layout this works well. I understood they was fitted onto for subarus so they didnt get damaged on the rally? So people wanted the road cars to be similar? Also means the pipe work from turbo to inlet is as short as possible?

or its due to the design of the boxer engine rather than stuff you "heard" the scoop was there long before the rally cars existed.

RICHARD J 18 July 2013 09:25 PM

I heard that scoops were fitted along with stickers to make the Impreza more desirable to the Chavs. BLow off valves however were considered overstepping the mark on a standard car.

jayallen 18 July 2013 09:28 PM

Imprezas are not the only cars that use a TMIC.

RICHARD J 18 July 2013 09:34 PM

Seriously, for a top mount a big scoop is the only way to get enough cold air in to it & two big vents let hot air out to help cooling further. Of course we all know the design is floored & at speed little air gets to the TMIC so most go for a FMIC which is far superior.

sovietspybob 18 July 2013 09:48 PM

The Mazda3 MPS has a top mount and a scoop

Infact my 1.4 diesel toyota yaris has a top mount intercooler as well :lol1: but sadly no scoop :(

big_joe 18 July 2013 10:34 PM

Surely the top mount was fitted to save costs and no other reason?? Didn't the WRC cars employ front mounts anyway?

fergal69 18 July 2013 11:33 PM

Thanks for the replies to my question folks.

Perhaps should have worded my original post in such a way as to avoid looking like a total noobie, but as said, not owned/driven anything with a turbo fitted.

Should have worded it as uniqness of Imprezas having air scoop for the tmic compared to other performance cars with turbos that don't have such air scoops for cooling intercoolers.

Dan- 19 July 2013 12:06 AM

so does the toyota glanza

Fair enough....we all have to start somewhere. Impreza,Nissan pulsar, Toyota starlet GT/glanza all have TMICs and bonnet scoops as standard. AFAIK on all of those cars it is generally agreed that a front mount is they way to go......so surely just a cost saving exercise by the manufacturers?

intercooler is moved on the rally car anyway, sits in fornt of the engine with direct in out air feed.

http://www.paddocktalk.com/news/html...SUBARU%202.jpg

in throught the front vent (intercooler is the radiator lookign thing with sti on it)

and then out through the bonnet vent in fornt of the scoop,

Love that front number plate.

LewisScoob 19 July 2013 04:13 PM

Pulsar GTI-r had a TMIC too...

I thought they were top mount to minimise lag?

Evo's run FMIC but a FM turbo too.

That's what they'll have you believe. In reality placing something which's purpose in life is to cool air on top of a red hot engine is only done for cheapness. In my opinion......

I kind of agree with this statement , but would it really have cost more to have a FMIC as standard?
