Sierra cosworth turbo in a WRX, will it work?

Hi to all,

I saw some Cosworth turbos going for a cheap price and I have heard about the hp u can reach from them! Are they so cheap because they are so out-dated? My mate has got one spare and he told me that u would have to modify the inlet manifold.

If anyone knows is this will work or has had any experience on these turbos could you please post. If this works it will help me go to around 420+bhp on my Wrx, and because of how cheap they are it will be me a bit of money and time I want to go with the real deal :D

P.S the turbo is a T34 Hybrid with an up rated housing.

420bhp in a wrx.............:eek2:

have you got uprated internals?

tubbytommy 02 July 2013 08:41 PM

as shrek says the engine will blow way before the said bhp plus you need ancillaries like uprated injectors, front mount, ecu map.

also the wrx clutch and gearbox wont take that bhp and the brakes wont stop you and the suspension get you round corners.

to get 450bhp out of a wrx costs big £££ its not just a case of bolting on a big turbo despite what you may have read on Subaru swap shop.

Yh I know all that,

I was just wondering if this turbo would work?

Thanks for the quick reply guys :thumb:

We sell the turbo Technics S206B Subaru turbo which is loosely based on the T38 Cosworth unit from many moons ago.
With 450bhp on Vpower and 500+ on meth mixes being the norm it works very well.
I have seen a few Imprezas fitted with T36 Cosworth turbos on rotated exhaust manifolds too.

Of course the turbo would work if you made it fit. Its a turbo.

I take it by talk of 420 hp you are talking about a T34/.63 exhaust housing?
If so it will struggle to do more than 400 but with the .63 housing it will be waaaaaaay laggier than whats on your car now. It wont make full boost till about 4500rpm on the YB so i doubt it will come in any sooner than that on the flat 4 as its still a 2.0l.

One good thing about the old garret stuff is its pretty strong and reliable.
I have also been thinking along the lines of using a T34 recently, but not with the .63 housing.

With a .48 rear housing full boost will be around 3500rpm but it will run out of puff at 6500rpm but will be good for 330bhpish. Fit a .55 rear housing and the boost threshold will increase, but so will power. Should be on full boost by 4000ish and make around 370-380hp.

I wish id never sold my brand new T34/.63 as it had a maram shaft - ALS baby!

Ps if it dont fit, make it fit!

Will be quite simple to make an adaptor plate i reckon!

Got me thinking again now lol.....

Whats a T36?

A T34/.63 rear housing is often referred to as a T35, but never heard of a T36

A T38 will be lag central.

It's another TT hybrid, they do them, for all sorts, Impreza, Focus ST, Evo.
As for lag, you're obviously confusing them with the units fitted to the Cosworth which was a different kettle of fish entirely. Stupidly low compression, highly inefficient and not a patch on the modern engines of today.

There's a few Subaru examples of the T38 based unit and at the risk of getting shot, here's an Evo example too.

**** the bed! That is impressive!

Ok, ive a mostly ford background so dont know about those turbos on an impreza engine. And although ive never owned a cosworth i know a bit about them.

How long have you worked for alan bud? I might have met you a few years back - i used to work for fast ford mag 2002-2006 and have done the odd rr shootout at your place

So then, how would a T34/.63 fair on the impreza lump? I imagine its a bit overkill for an otherwise standard engine?

This is all new to me!

Would be decatted, fuel pump, injectors and turbo. Poss ic if needed?
I dont know the limits of the std pistons and rods tho!

MartynJ 02 July 2013 11:29 PM

I'm Alans eldest son and have been working for him on and off for 24 years full time and part time before that.
The T34 .63 would work quite well on a stock Sti 7 or 8 lump, the problem is the wide availabilty of bolt on turbos that work just as well if not better in the 350-400bhp mark.
It's kind of hard to beat the stock twin scroll set up if you can lay your hands on one to be fair.
Stock Sti7 and 8 lumps have proven to be very hardy at up to 450bhp with decent supporting modifications.

Ah, should have said... Im rocking a 2001 UK300 bug wrx. Its got ppp but i belive that is just a map tweak.
The only reason id try and fit a T34 etc is because i know them, they are usually reliable and can be had for a good price.

A bit old hat now tho i guess. Cheers martyn
