4 pot front brakes without question ;)

xxxxSMITHYxxxx 20 June 2013 08:22 PM

No map yet want to do a few more things first mod wise, ow also has a td05 5h bigger turbo fitted

myblackwrx 20 June 2013 08:40 PM

Brakes (as already suggested),rear ARB,rear droplinks, steering rack bush and learning how the car handles/drives.

jason_2013 20 June 2013 09:06 PM

The standard suspension set up is quite poor on these. Ok for normal road use but no good for fast cornering. You will gain a better drive for you £ by modding that and the brakes. Just agreeing with the above comments really.

Engine wise if it's an early impreza with slanty intercooler then upgrade to a later bigger one. Don't bother with front mount though. Defo fit an uprated fuel pump. If you've got early grey injectors put v3/4 sti yellows in. Then sort out a remap straight away.

Air filter, exhaust and turbo but no re-map!!!!! GET it mapped!!!!!! Ideally don't drive it until mapped, but if you do stay off boost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

myblackwrx 20 June 2013 10:51 PM

Standard turbo is a TD05 if it's the 16G but I'm not sure what the OP means by '5H'.
The early WRX can take an exhaust/decat and induction kit without issues as long as you get it checked out by a specialist who knows what to look for.

StiX 20 June 2013 11:26 PM

I had an early 94 WRX, which had full decat and filter. Ran without issues for years, not the same as the later ones at all.

Stop panicking everyone!!

Is this the new regime of 'advice' on here?

'Tick Tick bang', 'ticking time bomb'.....?

Apparently my 2.5 is about to give way any second now - panic. Apart from the fact it was remapped in 2007 when it was nearly new and has been fine ever since.

Chill everyone, they don't all blow up you know??

jason_2013 20 June 2013 11:43 PM

Td05H is the early turbo used on import sti and wrx up to version 3. H stands for high pressure. The Td04L was used on the UK models where L stands for low pressure again up to version 3 both turbos are top entry. The Td04L then changed to front entry and the Td05H was replaced with ihi turbos.

I agree the early classics don't suffer too much with just an air filter and exhaust. The thing which kills them is overriding the boost control with a bleed valve or mbc.

StiX 20 June 2013 11:47 PM

Agreed. My 94 WRX had a turbo timer (remember those!), which also showed boost and it ran a little above normal due to full decat but nothing to worry about.

All it meant in reality was it gave about 10-15bhp more. Wan't ever going to 'blow up', 'tick tick boom', 'ticking time bomb', 'FFS remap NOW' etc. etc. etc.

sorry for my bad advice of getting the car properly set up for the mods :wonder:!!!! I just think that having any car set up after de-cat, air filter etc is a lot safer and gives piece of mind plus your get the most out of it!!

The early cars don't suffer as badly as later classics as far as decat / exhaust / filter changes. I think the ecu's were less advanced so weren't so picky. I know the MY99/00 with its lambda led fuelling needs a map tweak for any small change.

An ESL board fitted with a re-map would allow you to change the turbo, but the TD05 is standard on early Saloons anyway. Only WRX wagons got the TD04. You can also change the 380cc injectors for later 440's. With a map you will easily see 320bhp (maybe more, I've seen 340) on TD05 and

Suspension, brakes, ARB's, anti-lift and braces all make a huge difference and are well worth doing.

jason_2013 21 June 2013 08:35 PM

This is pointless until the year of car is known.

It's a L reg

xxxxSMITHYxxxx 21 June 2013 09:59 PM

Yea it's an l reg don't get me wrong car runs fine and pulls hard, I was under the impression that the td05h 5h was a slightly bigger turbo than standerd on this car, also has a welbro 380 fuel pump. Just after seeing what other people have done I mean I was and evo man up untill 4 days ago also have a full turbo back exhaust system. But must stress the car to me seems to run fine no lag blank spots ect. As I know the older style ecus seem to cope better with a few changes

myblackwrx 21 June 2013 10:07 PM

My 93WRX had induction kit, decat, slightly larger exhaust,Z4 ecu + mbc and made 279bhp,this was set up and checked on a rolling road.
Upgrade to 4 pot calipers as the standard brakes are shocking but this meant I had to upgrade the wheels as the 16" wheels on it wouldn't accomodate the larger calipers.
