Dont know if this will interest any of you, as most of you will know, I used to own a modded MY95 WRX the car got a little boring for me, so I made the wrong decision and moved to a MY95 BMW M3 Convertible........ this car was so boring I almost fell asleep! Loads of grunt, no edge.....

After 14days the M3 was sold and I picked up my current car, a MY99 (registered 2000 on a V plate) modded EVO V in yellow.

Specs:

MY95 Scooby WRX
> BPM Twin Dump DP
> HKS Hiper Ti-tip 3in exhaust system
> K&N Induction
> 17in Kahn RSZ black chrome wheels, toyo proxies
> AVO adjustable suspension, dropped 80mm
> JAP spec twin headlight conversion
> MRO Front lip
> MRO de-badge grill
> WRC replica spoiler
> Full colour co-ordination
> A few interior mods
> Approx 280+bhp

MY99 Mitsi EVO V

> HKS Decat DP
> Cat replacement pipe
> Blit NUR Spec 3in exhaust system
> HKS mushroom induction
> HKS Intercooler alloy piping
> HKS suspension
> HKS Boost controller
> HKS FCON V Engine management
> 18in ACE black chrome wheels
> Couple of interior mods
> Approx 350bhp when fettled

Personaly, on looks, I think the EVO has the more agressive appearance, however the scooby front end looks superb, the twin light conversion made it look mean (thanks CraigH :) ). Colour wise, ermmmm, the EVO is more noticable, the subaru more subtle.

Handling wise, the EVO wins hands down, even with the AVOs on the Scooby the EVO would eat it for brekkie. This is prob down the the AYC electronic toys on the EVO. I have never driven a car with such a large amount of sheer grip. I once had the Scooby spin on me, very violently, I never did drive it that hard again, this tentativness has gone with the mitsi, feels like it is nailed to the road. The EVO does have a very hard ride, then again, so did the scooby.

Performance wise, again the EVO has this, obvious really. Power delivery is brutal in either car. The mitsi seems hell bent on headbutting the redline!

Sound, easy one, the Scooby, I dont care what anyone else says, the sounds of the flat four is absolutly fantastic! Even with the Blitz on the EVO, it still sounds muffled!

Living with the cars

The EVO draws a MASSIVE amount of attention, so much so that the local boy racers have taken to driving into my road when the car is on the drive, stopping, having a gander at the car then burning off, quite un-nerving really. Drive down the road in the EVO, everyone will stop, kiddies will wave, thumbs up, shouts, mouths drop open etc...... the EVO is not a car for the shy! When I stop to fill up, I find myself looking about to see who is checking out the car - Paranoid or what?!

The Scooby was an easier car to live with, as standard, mod them and they get harsh, noisey, fantastic! Again, drive down the road and you will get looks, but that is pretty much about it with the scooby, no cheers, no thumbs up etc..... maybe they are getting a little too common?

Fuel, bloody nightmare on both these cars, but we do not own them for economy, these are just toys at the end of the day. The EVO has a smaller tank than the scooby, 140miles from a tank in the EVO, 190ish from the scooby.

Insurance, both are expensive cars to insure (esp when you are 22  ), the EVO was £200 more than the subaru. A 4.0 V8 TVR Chimera was £200 less than the scooby  :D

Mods, I spent about £6000 on the subaru in the 6months I owned it, I have purchased the EVO with all the mods already on it. Mods, good mods, are expensive for either of these cars.

Basicaly, they both have their good and their bad points. I cant really fault the scooby and I still have a soft spot for them, However, the EVO is a better all round package, better as standard, better when modded.

As I said before, these are my personal opitions, feel free to disagree, post your own observations, your own thoughts.......

Thanks for reading

Paul :D

PS: Lets not push this into the muppet place, I am hoping this will not turn into a 'my car is better than your car' thread :)

PPS: My car is better ;)

RichiW 20 May 2002 08:40 PM

Nice one POC :)

Went the same route myself, Terzo to Evo6.

The Evo is undoubtably the better car, however it is more expensive to run also....what a small price though for ultimate (i.m.o.) performance! :D

Still love the Scoob to bits though, i have to say :):):)

Rich.

cryptwalk 20 May 2002 08:50 PM

Hello, both outstanding cars IMHO. I totally agree with the sound element awsome noise out of the scoob. I still get the looks and the ocasional thumbs up in my area but maybe thats because i'm so good looking.:D:D:D:D

Crypt. MY95 wrex to yellow 5 evo tommorrow. :)

STi wanna Subaru 20 May 2002 08:58 PM

"The flying custard" Lovely car mate. Nice balanced (resonably ;) ) review.

I know if money wasn't the limiting factor (which it is for me) then I'd have an EVO as well.

PS You gonna let me have a go in it when we meet for that beer :D

DJ Dunk 20 May 2002 09:05 PM

Always liked the "Juicy" Scoob, but couldn't help thinking it looked over-modded and maybe a bit dated. The Evo just oozes quality and looks far classier, more modern, more raw and generally the dogs danglies.

You made the right choice :D I want one :(

Nice one Paul :)

Mental 20 May 2002 09:24 PM

Nice cars, I've heard a lot about them from Stealth (my boyf) although I have to say that I am biased and like the Scooby more! (I have to say that or he'll kill me!)

I don't think you can beat the Blitz zorst though, sounds loud as f@"k! He'll either be driving round with ear plugs in or he'll lose his hearing! (although he's got selective hearing when it comes to me!!!)

POC 20 May 2002 09:38 PM

RichiW - I think if you move from a scooby to an EVO then you will always have a soft spot for the impreza, the car has bags of character.

Crypt - Welcome to the dark side mate

Guy - Sell up and get one ya big tart ;) , u can have a go if ya like mate, no problems.

Dunk - Overmodded :( I think the lights finished it off, MAX POWERRRRRRRR! :D Agree with your thoughts on the EVO though, obviously!

Mental - Why dont u talk Tony into letting you buy his scooby? I am sure he will do you a good deal ;) The blitz is a bit louder on the scooby than the EVO, sounds great :D

Thanks for the comments guys.....

Paul

stephen30 20 May 2002 09:39 PM

Nice one Paul. Very informative read. So when are you chopping in the Evo for a Sport? :)

Steve

Mental 20 May 2002 09:55 PM

Tony always does me ... a good deal that is!!!!!

He's trying to get me to buy a Subaru Sport, then I can do it up and the insurance is still dirt cheap (like the Pug), but I'm going to have to be a bit tight on the purse strings to be able to get one ... and a girl still needs to be able to get some retail therapy!

I;ve put my name down for this girl racer TV prog which was advertised on here, now I'm just waiting to hear those three little words...Lights, Camera, Action! or is it Police, Camera Action !!!!!

D8UGF 21 May 2002 01:03 AM

POC,
I know u aint slaggin the scoob mate, but have you driven
a newer style scoob for a decent time? Just interested in
what your comparison would be between say a STi coupe or
RB5 etc and the Evo. I own a 94 sti and I am sure the newer
Imprezas are like night and day compared to mine and your
old one. Just interested if anyone has driven both and what
comparisons they have.
Ps that Evo is one evil lookin motor.

Dougie

P1Fanatic 21 May 2002 01:13 AM

Does the fact that it is yellow in colour not mean it will be noticed more than a silver scoob? I mean Ive been in Warped Chris's Evo6 which is silver before he went to the states and it stands out less than a P1 in Sonic Blue IMHO.

Shaun27 21 May 2002 02:41 AM

These Yellow V's are getting a bit too common for my liking.....:D

Bruiser.STi 21 May 2002 04:04 AM

Next move would have to be going back to the bright yellow new S202 STi, Im sure you would be swayed back to the Sub's agian then...
I like the EVO, it makes your SUbie look dated for sure.....

EVO's are renowned for being driver proof, takes a lot to get it wrong in a 5 or 6.....

Good luck with it..

Bruiser

P1Fanatic 21 May 2002 04:40 AM

LOL Bruiser - tell that to the guy whose video came around from some french driving school last week.

Bruiser.STi 21 May 2002 05:55 AM

P1- You referring to the EVo 7 on the track...which gets it all horribly wrong??? Saw that as well....although he was probably pushing the envelope a little!!!!

POC 21 May 2002 09:26 AM

D8UGF - I must admit, I have not driven the new scooby at all. This is a comparison between my previous and my current car, I am sure the new scoobies are much better than the old beasts.

P1Fanatic - It stands out like a sore thumb mate, not for the shy!

Bruiser.STi - I think I will wait and see what Subaru come up with when they release the new facelift, that new 202 looks schweeeeeet though :D

Cheers guys (and girl)

Paul

Bruiser.STi 21 May 2002 09:37 AM

Pretty fond of the EVO 6.5 TME myself.....Heres a pic of one with 18 inch OZ's....looks vary "Rally" ready....
Was considering buying it.....but they wanted a little too much money for it....http://upload.turbosport.co.uk/galle...2537749004.jpg

Will be damn interesting to see the new SUbie...spy pics shouldn't be far off....

MichelleWRX1994 21 May 2002 09:58 AM

It is yellow..... :p

Hmmmm, not gonna sway me, I am Subaru loyal :D
I am glad you are happy with ya car :D

philc 21 May 2002 10:05 AM

that evo looks brilliant (not for the retiring driver), however I'll stick with my choice of a WRX wagon 'cos
- the WRX is cheaper to buy and run
- there's good headroom if u r 6 feet 2 inches tall
- the ride is less hard than an Evo
and the killer reason is
- I can get a large lawnmower in the back of my WRX wagon for my fortnightly mowing jobs. :)

RICH WILD 21 May 2002 10:17 AM

WOW POC!

That EVO is GOOOOORGEOUS!!

That's one of the nicest ones I've EVER seen. Love those wheels.

You've even got me thinking now......

If you don't mind me asking, how much does one of those things cost these days for that kind of spec? Don't have to answer on here if you don't want.

Cheers

Rich

cryptwalk 21 May 2002 10:35 AM

Is the white beat gonna grace the for sale pages then rich?
You can pic a evo 5 up from about 16k upwards dude.;)

DjacK 21 May 2002 10:44 AM

OK!! Toooooo many of you are buying EVO's now.. I might have to sell mine!!!!!!!!!! ;) :) :D

POC, nice parking, right where you are not supposed to :p :D

POC 21 May 2002 10:55 AM

LOL@Chelle!

At least I didnt kerb my wheels (as you girlies would have done!)

Bruiser.STi 21 May 2002 11:24 AM

Djack, what kinda power figures were you getting on the dyno???

RICH WILD 21 May 2002 12:41 PM

Cheers Crypt,

£16k mmmmmmm.......

I'd have to inherit some money first I think. I've spent far too much on the old white beast to sell it at the moment. It owes me about 20 (including buying it) and I'd be lucky to get 10 for it.

Would LOVE an Evo like that though!

Rich

Adam M 21 May 2002 12:51 PM

dont talk about how much your car owes you. If you do, you have to put a price on how much happiness it brings you then subtract that from the how much it stands you in.

Best thing I ever did was decide to write off the cost of my car, otherwise I would worry about its value for ever more.

As far as I am concerned, car wise, my only asset is an £800 g reg 205 1.6 gti, and something priceless for the weekend.

DjacK 21 May 2002 02:04 PM

Bruiser,

I have the dyno right here, have a look..

At the time it was de-cat, HKS SuperDrager and a HKS Filter..

It is down on torque, from a standard EVO at the time.. All sorted now though! :)

juan 21 May 2002 04:39 PM

Hi POC,

Followed your comments and pics here and on lancerregister.

I wasn't keen at all on the colour or the stripe at the start but the pic at the start of this thread makes it look wicked. Top motor.

POC 21 May 2002 04:42 PM

:D Cheers Juan ;)
