spec me a turbo!!!
after a series of monumental **** ups iv bitten the bullet and just byuilt myself a 2.1 which il be dropping in this afternoon!
what i want to know is a good turbo to use and debating on whether or not to go to a rotated setup if i can find a good second hand one car is basically an imreza type r with 2 extra doors spec is:- 2.1 stroker vf23 steel rods mahle stroker pistons sti type r heads and cams etc 2.5 nitrided and cross drilled crank unequal length headers with up pipe turbo back mongoose so its not stupidly loud for the track was remapped before initial engine went pop and made 296 brake which is pretty cack in all honesty and since then iv bought an adjustable fpr and obviously built the 2.1 i want good reliable power but dont want to munch the gearbox as iv got dccd and im lead to believe these are only good for 350 brake as its the 4 bolt one car is built to batter round a track all day so i dont want everything on the limit but want good useable power can anyone recommend a turbo as i think the vf23 is going to be screaming its tits off iv got a td05 but il need to convert it to front entry if this is better or if there is something more suitable to use then tell me...direct fir or not car also has a simtek with anti lag and launch on it and i WILL be using it cheers |
How much power do you want?
I would be fitting a VF28 or 35, they're much the same turbo for spool. The 28 will easily make 310-330 and the 35 will make 330-360 depending on supporting mods. |
like i say i just want the car to be reliable and take a good hammering at the trackdays its built for
330 - 350 would be nice but i dont want the gearbox to get munched to quickly is there a turbo people generally use on the strokers? |
If you're on a 5 speed mate then your choices are more limited as anything too big will munch your gearbox.
It's the torque that will kill the box not the bhp. Many WRX owners out there were running 360bhp+ on 5 speeds, but you add drag racing or lots of traffic light grand prixs into the mix and it soon goes pop! Part of me is thinking a 2.1 really should be mated to something more capable than a vf35 or vf28, but if all you want is quick spool and acceleration on track and aren't worried about top end, then probably best you go for the smallest turbo you can get away with so quick spool, instant power. On a standard 2.0, a vf35 is typically good for about 320-340bhp - I've only see a few that make more, most seem to be 320-330. vf28 more like 310-330 as said, but on a classic they spool quick. You could also look at a billet 16g, something like the SC36 might be nice, or Andy Forrest does a range too I think - see if you can get a few graphs off the SC thread. If you want quicker spool I'd also take the tubular headers off and go back to standard ones based on conversations I had with the late great Harvey Smith and my own experience with em. |
I dont have anystandard headers to fit!
I just want good strong smooth power with nothing running at its limit Think im just gonna run it in map it on the vf23 and see how long it lasts Vf23 still good for 320-330 i think however it will be screaming but does spool up fast I think the motor is capable of a lot more but as we all agree the box wont handle much abuse over the top power limit either my vf23 or td05 has to offer i just want something to look forward to in the future Il have a look on the sc thread as lots of people must have a similar engine spec to me so il see what works beat! Cheers for the input |
car is basically an imreza type r with 2 extra doors TD05 16g, or VF34 if you can find a good one. |
Reshelled into 4 door so dccd and vf23 etc etc suppose its same as a type ra but i have leccy windows but thats about all it does have inside along with a cage and 2 seats!
|
How do i tell the difference between 16g 18g etc etc i do have a td05 already top entry
