right im planning a build.....advice needed please

as you may know my car shat its bottom end today after mapping,it made 353.9 bhp.i have had a think about my options and i wouldnt be happy with a second hand engine or just replacing the bearings in my car so im going for a no-cut-corners build and i need some advice please

my car "should" have a SCDB so im hoping to use that.i would like to build it for big power next year but for the time being i will be happy to run it at the mapped 353bhp.i would like 450 bhp out of it next year so would i be better off doing a 2.1 stroker or just a forged 2.0.advice please.........

also this will be done over quite a few months as money is tight at the minute so i can start collecting bits when i have some spare cash

is there anything else i need to add to this shopping list? for the time being i will use my wrx heads BUT i will be upgrading them next year

-crank
-pistons
-rods
-acl bearings race series
-high flow oil pump
-full timing kit and water pump
-multi layer head gaskets

im not going to be buying any cheap ****e as i will be having this done properly so i want good quality parts.what seals/gaskets will i need and whats the running in procedure? do i need running in oil etc etc?

any advice would be great cheers

matt

cheers

Would you not be better saving for an STi as a start point?

bustaMOVEs 06 June 2013 09:30 PM

Was the bottom end not uprated on yours?

Edit, just read other thread where it's explained better:thumb:

Sad times hey, for budget get a sti engine, good for 400 all day,
Or spend the dosh and get it forged etc, but I see your broke now.
Avcs afaik I'm sure you'll need a sti ecu to run as wrx ecu don't have the feature to run.

I have a 2002 Bugeye WRX running AVCS, I went for a built 2.5 fully forged with the STI 8 heads. If I did it again I'd stay 2.1 with AVCS. My AVCS is running on the tumbler wiring (Spec C manifold) on a Syvecs ECU.

sorry to here that mate, got me wondering now about mapping my bug wrx

jura11 07 June 2013 01:47 AM

Hi there

Sorry to hear that

About the building yours speak over here with engine builders and what quotes will give you.

We are first time went with 2.1L and 2.1L is better option than forged 2.0L,difference in price is not so big and you can/will gain something extra on the spool up/torque and power, its simply worth

About the running AVCS on yours, you will need JDM WRX ECU which can control AVCS or you can go route of the AlcaTek or Syvecs, depends on budget

Good luck

well i have been speaking to my engine builder today and i wasnt aware of the costs of building a 2.1 properly so i have settled for forging my bottom end,i shall be using parts from real street performance to keep costs down and re-using my wrx heads until funds allow otherwise, main thing is the lump will be forged with no corners cut,new oil pump/timing kit aswell etc

mickywrx 07 June 2013 08:48 PM

Cost difference from a 2.0 to a 2.1 shouldn't be that much different if re-using your block. :wonder:

Not sure there, but difference between the 2.0L and 2.1L is not so high, you will need EJ257 crank, stroker pistons and probably custom rods.Speak to other builders over here and you will see if its worth to go with 2.1L over 2.0L and mainly speak with them about the pricing

We have run 2.1L which has been based on Open Deck block at 490bhp without the problem

The cost and hastle involved to get 450 bhp out of your wrx starting point makes no sense to me.
it really would be cheaper and easier starting with an sti.
dont forget after the rebuild you still need a 2k box and clutch.

I'm with TT on this, having modded my classic to beyond this power level I know first hand the costs involved. A newage STI makes a lot of sense as a starting point & can be taken to 450 on the standard engine until it blows then you can forge it. This is exactly the route I'll be taking for my next car.

stonejedi 08 June 2013 11:33 AM

What people need to realise is buying a second hand engine one can never tell the esact condition of it it's like playing the lottery.but a fresh engine build put together with quality parts and built by a builder who knows what he's doing should give more peace of mind I'm swapping my engine in my wife's car but if that ever blew it would definately be a 2.1 rebuild on the cards.SJ.

I'll give you some advice.

Take it i've learnt from experience.

Mark sure you work out the exact pricing schedule and breakdown up front.
Make sure you agree on time scales upfront and enforce them.
Do not pay anything upfront. Staged payments are fine but nothing upfront.
Check up on their history first.

I agree with that if you are using a company for the first time, but if you have a subaru specialist that you trust and use on a regular basis you should be fine.SJ.

so sell my wrx with no engine which wont make much money and spunk 7k on an sti thats with a used engine which could possibly at some point suffer failure or rebuild my engine and fit a 6 speed (£5k ish) and have a car capable of pushing big power through a brand new forged engine and better brakes than an sti.

at the moment my car isnt worth much money,if i were to break it the 2 main £££ bringers are spoken for as the engine is dead and the brakes would be stopping with me so im left with not alot of big money spares on it,even the gearbox/diff would only fetch £300 ish so i wouldnt even make £2k breaking it and i would need to add another £5k for an sti (probably more) or rebuild mine and fit a 6-speed for around £5k and the lump will be brand new built to the spec i want-makes more sense for me to rebuild my car as either way i will have to spend £5k ish and my way leaves me with a brand new engine.

so less of the boring "buy an sti yawn" and more helping me regarding my build please, what oil pump to use, what oil to use,how to run it in etc etc

not being funny guys but im not going to go and buy an sti,i love my car and it looks mint so its staying and will be back better than before :D

jura11 08 June 2013 03:22 PM

Hi there

As I said about the engine build,I would go with 2.1L stroker for sure, have look on the Advanced Automotives,AA(Advanced Automotives) selling kit for good money and should be OK for yours needs

http://www.advancedautomotives.com/s...er-kit-3-w.asp

Or speak with any engine builder over here,I would speak with all of the engine builders and then I would choose...

About the oil pump,If you will be going with AVCS heads I would go with 11mm Oil pump, but still you should be OK with modified Oil pump, which selling like Advanced Automotives,RCM or APi

How to run it,you can ask yours preferred mapper if he can make for you run in map

OK fair enough, just trying to help. 2.1 stroker kit from ,Laterall, RCM oil pump, run it in on cheap 10/40 using a running in map so you can give it a bit of boost so the rings bed in properly. Set aside funds for 6 speed or PPG as your WRX box will definitely blow up at 450. You will need injectors & turbo to get you to 450. If you aren't building it yourself you'll need a good engine builder, Paul Finch is one of the best & I can highly recommend him.
There is loads more but this may help for starters.

Henrik 08 June 2013 06:29 PM

I would do the heads at the same time personally. Changing heads later on will cost a lot of unnecessary money, and/or be a ball ache (gaskets, map tweak, labour (unless you do it yourself, in which case "ball ache")).

What are you going to be using the car for? I think if I was starting again, I'd go for a CDB 2.5 from AS Performance and run an unfeasibly large turbo, but even a 2.0 with a decent sized turbo is fun IMO :)
