Noisy EJ20 - but is it what it seems...

Guys,

Can anyone help diagnose this please? My engine is knocking - well it seems to be. It's got what sounds exactly like a bottom end knock - but - only at low engine speeds.

Rev it up to about 2000RPM and it's lovely - quiet, smooth - as it should be. Also, the engine oil light goes out - and stays out - as soon as the motor spins on the starter.

Any ideas guys what this might be.....bottom end? - something else...?

Any suggestions/intel/advice gratefully received.

Regards

You would know if the bottom end was knocking.

What age car?

If it's something like a 97 car then piston slap is fitted as standard.

Quite possible its a worn timing belt tensioner or the front pulley loose - would have it checked ASAP to be on the safe side.

Car is an early 2002, with 87,000 miles genuine on it.

Mick, a 2.2 GX Legacy I owned years ago (fantastic car) loosened it's front pulley - made a right racket. I sorted it ok - but good suggestion - will check it out.

There is also a 'whirring' type noise when driving - sounds like a wheel bearing - but being made by the engine. Noises seem to be from the front of the lump - so something cam belt related has occurred - will be having a look in there asap.

Any other thoughts - please share.

Thanks and regards

Judging by you comments, I'd suspect a couple of the cambelt idler bearings have dried out and possibly the tensioner is knocking, I'd inspect asap

Planning on doing exactly that Rob - eager to get stuck into it - but going on holiday shortly, so slightly frustratingly, it'll probably have to wait for a fortnight or so.

Will post back when all the timing belt covers are off and I can see the belt, tensioner and idlers. Notably, the car has excellent (mainly main dealer) service history - but there is no mention of a cam belt replacement and it's at 87,000 miles.

More in due course. Thanks for you advice
