Blown turbo symptoms?

As title chaps, just needed your input on this, because I'm not a 100% sure it's gone, but something's wrong.

It's like an up pipe flexi has gone, that sort of blowy raspy noise? But I've had it replaced with a Harvey smith one. Same noise at idle, an low revs.

But now when climbing on boost, it turns into a metallic louder tinny blowy whistle noise? Still hits 1.3bar making good power, an holds. No smoke, engine is as smooth as a baby's bum. Had the engine an map checked last week when up pipe fitted. But noise still there.

Turbo was mint when fitted, virtually no play in shaft at all.

It's a TD05 front entry on a Wrx bug.

Any ideas info please chaps?

Does it sound like this?

scoobaru mad 05 June 2013 11:53 AM

No were near as loud, but not a million miles away either.

You can't tell anythings wrong at all with the windows up?

An it sounds more normal an better when warmed up properly.

Thanks for the input mate. I'll compare sounds tonight. An try an get footage if I can.

Cheers dude.

Right, did a 40 odd second clip. Does anything sound out the ordinary in this.

Best heard from 20 secs onwards.

I had the window open slightly.

I've noticed it's only makes that weird noise for the first few mins? When it gets warmer, you can just hear the raspy blowyness from under/around the up pipe down pipe area??

Hard to tell from the clip. It may well be the slip joint in the up pipe leaking a little until its warmed up.

There's no slip joint bud. It's an AS performance one (or Harvey smith trick pipe)

I will find it, just needed some pointers

I have Harvey headers and up pipe, they always sounds tinny, raspy when cold. Could be your down pipe blowing?

I've never known of any turbo blowing without some form of smoke,I think it could be a split in a rubber hose or crack in some part of your pipe work get the torch out and screwdriver and make sure everything is done up tight then have a close nose around your pipe work maybe even you exhaust manifold looking for something out of place.SJ.

Cheers guys, after going out in it last night, I think I can pretty much rule the turbo out. My mate V7 STi is running a APSSR 40. With virtually the exact same mods, bar my ported headers an up pipe. An were almost sided by side up to 4th (or triple figures:D)

But as said. No smoke, no loss of power, an only from cold.

Think I'll take to my garage on sat, have a proper mooch around under the car.

Thanks peeps :thumb:

It's still bugging me this

Everything that you can see looks sealed, no carbon deposits to indicate something leaking. That screech is still there when claiming onto full boost, then suddenly disappears??

It honestly sounds like a fiesta from cold, when it warms up its fine. But Christ its embarrassing :freak3:

Could a turbo be blown on its journals, but not pass oil to the exhaust?

I'm seriously considering a VF23 IF! It has gone.
