is this just to connect to play or does it charge too? and would it work with an iphone?

It depends what head unit you're using. This has no form of electrics in it. Basically it is a posh cubby hole! You push the drawer and inside is a spring loaded holder to fit various sizes of device. Depending what cable you use, you could run a blackberry, MP3 player, USB stick, iPhone etc etc. these are mega rare now and this one is as new.
