Anyone going to Goodwood Festival of Speed?
 

Just wondered if anyone else was going to this? Or what's the verdict from those who have been before?

I've never been but my son wants to go so will probably go on Saturday 13th July :)

I'll be there on a rescue unit on the rally stage.

I've worked it loads of times.

My advice would be;
get there early.
Wear comfy walking shoes
Take your own food and drink

Been a couple of times,probably the biggest and best car show in the country,loads to do and watch,only down side is the entry price at circa £50 per adult per day(when i went a few years ago),in the grandstands is more!,oh and get there early to avoid the queues of traffic that build up miles away!

I have to say that it really is as good as people say it is.

Make sure you get up to the rally stage at the top of the hill right next to the finish paddock.

If there's decent weather it will be incredibly busy.

How old is your son Lorraine?

I normally go every year.

You need:

-Very comfy shoes, you will be on your feet all day and will easily walk 5 or 6 miles
-A picnic and a picnic blanket, everyone does it and the food is too expensive to buy
-Sun tan cream - it is always sunny and you will be out all day
-Be prepared to queue - there are chances to go for a ride in a Landy or a Cayenne etc but the queue could easily take an hour!
-To plan where to be and when - the cars are grouped together by class, ie - modern super cars, F1 cars, 60's, 70's etc etc and you want to be in the best place to see them all, but that is different for each category! So for example the modern super cars are pretty boring - seriously a Veyron is pretty average compared to the other cars in attendance so you are best looking at them in the paddock when they are stationary, but the F1 cars always do burnouts on the main straight outside the house, and the 50's and 60's Le Mans racers make such an insane noise it is always fun to be in the paddock for those.

Yep, I go every year. Usually on the Saturday and always take your big lenses.

Thanks everyone, that's really helpful :thumb: Is Saturday the best day to go do you reckon or is Sunday just as good? (Can only be weekend due to work)

I've never done Saturday, but not all the cars run on Saturday and I'm not sure if all the support events run either. Sunday is the big day when something crazy like 60,000 people attend, great atmosphere, lots of cars, the media turn up etc, personally I wouldn't consider any other day. I also wouldn't go in the grand stands .... in my view that's not the point of Goodwood, and nothing beats getting stuck in and looking around the paddocks.

Personally I always go on the Saturday as its more relaxed than the Sunday. Sunday is the day when drivers are more interested in pushing quick times up the hill. Saturday is more of a showboat and burnout day.

An F1 car shredding tyres on the limiter from 20ft away is heart stopping! :)

All the cars go up on Saturday they just don't have the same drivers.

Race drivers are very busy and though most drivers will be there Saturday and Sunday some can only do one day.

The crowd is nearer 100,000!! I asked how old your son was as you'd have to have hung on to him had he been younger as it really is a bit of a crush with that amount of people there.

As Romford said do try and get into the 'F1' paddock as it really is worth it to get so close to the cars but if I were you I'd go there first as by lunch time it's a bit of a scrum.

Don't forget to get to the top of the hill where it's quieter and you can see the rally paddock, rally stage and of course the finish paddock for the hill climb.

I had a chat with 'a friend' who has told me that 'an F1 driver' will be driving 'an F1 car' and will be going for the outright hill record. He wouldn't tell me more than that but everyone is very excited by this.

GFOS is a fantastic event. Every type of performance vehicle you can imagine. I've been there many times although I've missed the last couple as I believe you need a rest from such events every now and then to appreciate it next time you go!
As said, it can be quite expensive but so what - it's a great day!

I my experience there is no difference between the sat/sun only the friday is less and that is reflective of the entry ticket price(more of a set up and press day),the F1 teams are there for the whole weekend but they split there drivers so for example red bull would have vettel on sat,webber on sunday or vice versa,iirc you can check on the website to see which vips/drivers are due on which day,so you can choose!;);)

Whatever day you choose, get your tickets in advance. You 'may' be able to pay on the gate for Saturday but you will most definitely NOT be able to do that on Sunday as it will be sold out.

Thanks again for all your advice on this, had remembered that is my son's school prom on Friday 12th, so he may not want to be up and about early on the Saturday so decided to book tickets for the Sunday; have booked in advance as per your advice :thumb:

Now just debating whether to look for a hotel/ B&B in the area for the Saturday night so we can get an early start the next day!

Hotels local to Goodwood are stupidly expensive FoS weekend!!!

The hotel we used to stay in Chichester at was £180 a night!!! :eek:
