position lights

ok i thought my car had low beam , normal beam and high beam , but on my 99 uk 2000 turbo when i turn the light stalk once round to the sort of side light sign om the stalk i have nothing from the headlights ........but the dash lights up ?? i read my manual and it says the first click is for (position lights ,instrument panel, tail lights and license plate.................so SHOULD i be getting any light from front at all and where are the position lights????? have m.o.t coming up is not having a low beam a failure???? thanks

They are the two outer white lights, outside the headlights, almost set into the wing, but pointing mostly forwards, sort of pyramid shaped.

Then you have main and dip on the actual headlight, a pair of (useless) foglights, and your indicators set into the bumper below the headlights and outside the foglights.

There is no normal, low and high, just dip, and main beam.
Dip for round town and with oncoming traffic, main beams for countryside and no oncoming traffic, or flashing someone.

Low and high beams are an Americanism and to be avoided, please;)

BTW: if the sidelights aren't working, it may be the bulbs: Open the bonnet, remove the screw on the inner top face (it screws into the headlight), and then pull the light HARD forwards, towards the front of the car. It's on a ball and socket. Replacement is position ball on socket and strike it sharply straight back with heel of hand, then replace screw.

thanks mate i have no dipped when i turn it to first setting only dash illumintates with tail lights and number plate light .....any ideas why dipped isnt working .?? mot failure would that be??

winston69 09 May 2013 02:08 PM

Dipped is only on second setting, first is for sidelights

kezwaldo 09 May 2013 03:15 PM

so if second setting is dipped whats normal beam ?????? because i have lights on my second setting (which u say is dipped ) then highest beam when blue icon glows on dash !! so theres either dipped or full beam now in between for day to day driving?? most cars have dipped then main beam then full beam 3 settings???

Lol if it's that complexed wait until you find the bright button, not to mention why won't my sidelights turn off conundrum

kezwaldo 09 May 2013 03:27 PM

:D

Tubby where are you...

First is sidelights , second is headlamps on.
Push stalk forward for high beam!

I've already explained this.

Scoobs have sidelights, (first click on the lighting switch stalk), headlight dip beam, (second click) which is for around town, and with oncoming traffic, and main beam, (push the stalk away from you, or pull it towards you for a flash), and this is for countryside driving or no oncoming traffic.

Where you get the idea most cars have THREE types of light, is beyond me, since NO car I've ever driven has had more than sides, dip and main. (except for daft foglights, of course).

Sidelights should illuminate two white lights which are, as I said, to the outside of the headlights, separate from the headlights. You should also have two red lights at the rear. These four are sometimes referred to as position lights as they are used to show the position of the vehicle when parked.

So:

First lighting switch click: two white front sidelights, two red rear lights.
Second lighting switch click: headlights, dip or main beam according to position of stalk.
