Engine/Alternator Noise

Any ideas guys?

Car is running fine, just get this noise occasionally. Had the cambelt done before I had it, March 5th. Possibly knackered Alternator?

Sounds like something rattling around in the cam cover, what year is it. Are you having any issues with the alternator.

Put the tip of a screw driver on the case of the alternator and your ear on the handle, might help you hear if thats where the fault lies.

It is a 2005 Blob. Will go and have another look in a minute. Just reading up on your reply from the other thread

Yeah probably best keep it in here. If its a 2005 then it will have the little cambelt guides on the corners. If these aren't fitted securely they can come loose and rattle around. Will post you some pics up.

Heres the cam guides.

One pic you can see it fitted correctly and the other it isn't. They are also designed so the the 2 bolts can be fitted first then the cam guide slid on and tightened up.

They are light and made of brass and after having them in my hand myself only a few days ago I think its one of these or a bolt.

If you get the cam cover off you may see some lines on the belt where the cam guide has been rubbing into the belt.

You are an absolute star pal! :) I will go and have a look now!

I might not be right but if I am you either want it securing or fishing out. They are only there incase the belt snaps to stop it springing out of control.

If it's not those, remove the alternator drive belt and run the engine again. If it still does it, stop the engine, get hold of the crankshaft pulley and try wiggling it.

Mine did similar, and it was the crankshaft pulley delaminated.

Thanks guys have emailed pole position as they are two minutes down the road maybe take it to them the weekend to have a look.

Turns out it was a loose guide. I say loose guide, what I mean is...Not actually secured, the bolts weren't in it, it was simply sat on top of the cambelt!!!

This resulted in a new belt.

Very lucky there mate, looks in a similar condition to mine when I took mine out. Good job you got it sorted!

Paul_251 03 May 2013 09:50 PM

Would a 2001 have these guides ?

adamroutley 04 May 2013 11:41 PM

Stu: very lucky indeed. I've been to Scotland with it!!

I'm not sure. mine doesn't have the corner guides, just one main one in the middle.
