Working out the running cost of a DECT phone for one year.
According to the manual, 0.7W consumption on standby, phone in charger.
0.7 / 1000 = 0.0007 KWH Cost per unit of electricity=11p. 0.0007x 11p=0.0077 pence (thats for one hour) x 24 x 365= 67.5 pence. Correct? |

0.7w /1000 = .0007kw not kwh *UPDATE* Right I thought I'd do all the maths so... 0.7W=0.7J/s Therefore usage in 1 year = 0.7*60*60*24*365 = 22,075,200 J 1KWh = 3,600,000 J Therefore usage in 1 year is 22075200/3600000 = 6.132KWh @11p/Kwh = 67.452 p So yes you are correct! :thumb: |
if you leave it on charge constantly you'll do no good to it's battery and it'd cost you less to run if you remove it from it's charger between charges...

Ni-CD can be left on a very small trickle current indefinetely (otherwise they wouldn't be used in external alarm boxes etc). Ni-Mh aren't so good for this. Better if its a peak detect (Delta-T) charger and given a pulse charge every so often to counteract the self discharge. Li-ion not an issue- as it will have a dedicated charge control circuit...otherwise they'd start exploding ;) But they should never be allowed to discharge as excessively discharging Li-Ion batteries does kill them. Eitherway if its a constant current charger ni-cd should be chared around at c/20 or with ni-mh it should be around C/300 (once fully charged) where C is the capacity divided by the number giving the charge rate in milliamps. The problem is some DECT phone have shyte charge circuits. Our Motorola DECT phone has killed its batteries, so obviously has a "dumb" charger that gives out too much current and overcharges the cells. Whereas the cells in the Panasonic DECT phones we used to have outlasted the phones; The old cells from the old Panasonic phones are actually being used in the Motorolas now :lol1: |

Do you ever turn the tv on? I forgot about the cost of the dect chargers standby - however if it's an extension charger and not the base station, it can be turned off. |
As a rough guide, to supply 1W for 1 year costs £1. Your phone will cost a great deal more in calls, line rental, initial purchase price and (possibly) replacement batteries than it ever will in power.

You have to pay for a line to have an internet connection, we aren't all living in Virgin'd up areas.
