Removing skirts - what do you leave behind?
 

Hi all, I'm planning a classic purchase shortly, and am trying to decide which model to go for. I much prefer the clean, non-skirted look of the RA, but the car itself might be a bit raw for me? Clearly I could buy a non RA and remove the skirts, but is it a big job to tidy up afterwards? Do they collect all the road grime and therefore encourage rust etc in the sills? Would it usually be a bodyshop job, or on a good example would the paint underneath be fine after a good clean? Thanks a lot for any help.

Easy to take off, remove a few screws from under the skirt and it pulls off. You'll be left with the fixing holes in the sill which will need to be filled in and the sills resprayed. I've had thoughts about doing this to mine as the cleaner look of the STI RA's look very nice with the right wheels :thumb:

As for rust etc, I had an RA a number of years ago and the sills had no real signs of rust issues only the usual graval rash you would expect.

Thanks Jay. If the screw holes are underneath the sill can they just be plugged short-term? If they're not visible then plugging them could avoid a respray I guess?

The problem is that cars fitted with skirts collect alot of grime behind them.

Its less of a problem for cars never fitted with the skirts for obvious reasons, just prepare for the worst when removing yours. But if there is rust there it's better to get it sorted as soon as poss.
