ring trip, tyres and advice

Hi guys,
Going to the ring for the first time in 3 weeks just trying to get everything sorted.

What tyres do you recommend? Im goin to put new tyres on my standard 17's so looking for a good track day / road tyre.

Looked at the Federal 595's or AD 08's just not sure which path to go down.
Any other recommendations?

Anything else I should know before i go, except don't crash? :P

Thanks

RE070's are good for the 'ring. If its your first visit you won't be going that fast, track knowledge plays a massive part there.
Get your brakes sorted and check everything on the car.
Don't try and race anyone and keep an eye on your mirrors and you'll be fine and have fun :thumb:

Give Anger a shout on here, he's often over there. Been once myself, didn't end well but had a great time up to then. Would say one thing, take plenty of spare cash or money on a card. If the worst does happen it comes in very handy, €400 per 4 metre section of barrier last time I "heard". The ring museum is worth a look if the weather comes in, as well as the surrounding towns. Where you staying?

BlueBugEye 07 April 2013 08:46 PM

Road tyres will be fine on the ring, no way you'll push it that hard, unless you have a death wish!

I've been over twice, both times on Toyo T1r's this year I'll be on Hankook V12's you'll be hard pushed to better 10 mins on your first visit, the local roads are amazing though!

ditchmyster 08 April 2013 08:49 AM

Lol, i did under 10 mins with a fully loaded car, which amongst other things included a bicycle and a bathroom sink, which has to be a record if only because of the sink.:lol1:

My advice would be, spend the money making sure you have good brakes and high temp fluid and a good geo set up, you'll not be wearing your tyres out unless your doing a good few laps at maximum attack and if you are, do you really want to spend £4/500 on new ones just to wreck them, maybe see if you can find a decent set of part worn's if thats the case, i've done that for track days when all i'm after doing is going for a good hoon, plenty on here swap from 17's to 18's, i swapped a part worn set for a brand new set with different profile so they are about.

Go steady and enjoy.:thumb:

What do people do for fuel when there and on the way, is 99/vpower available?

BlueBugEye 08 April 2013 03:06 PM

VPower is widely available but not always 99 Ron! Avoid fuel in Belgium if at all possible, there is even 102 available in Adenau.

sovietspybob 08 April 2013 03:20 PM

I found 97 & 98 RON in every petrol station from Nurburg to Calais which is fine for cruising the several hours on the mways and as said there's up to 102 RON (for a massive price) near the ring so no issues with fuel when there.

I'm currently thinking the same re:tyres as i'm going the end of May for 5 nights, thinking of just renewing my RE050A's as they're cracking road tyres but i can't really be bothered to lug my track wheels all the way out there as i won't be pushing it enough to justify it as it'll only be my 2nd visit and the first in the scooby.

mogs132 08 April 2013 04:05 PM

thanks for all your advice guys really helpful going for 5 days, will look for good road tyres.
what tyres do you all use?

giving her a full service and check before i go. not looking to do quick times just going for the experience :)

BlueBugEye 08 April 2013 06:44 PM

When in May are you out there we (South East Scoobies) are there from the 24th to the 28th.

young un 08 April 2013 07:47 PM

some of us off here and midland scoobies will be there from the 24th may to 27th (about 10 cars if they all turn up)

Steve_PPP 08 April 2013 10:21 PM

Decent branded road tyres will be fine if its your first year. As said, sort your brakes and suspension out first if you haven't and just make sure the car is reliable and safe (no leaking fluids!).

It takes a lot of laps to learn the Ring, don't think you know it just cos you've mastered it on the PS3 ;)

Been 3 times before and going back with South East Scoobies in May 24th-28th.

mogs132 09 April 2013 12:57 AM

Doing on the 9-14 may cant wait now, yea getting all the suspension and brakes sorted this week just need to decide what colour to spray alloys and what to wrap them in :)
Been watching loads of youtube vids and a few sessions on ps3 just to see what kind of things there are and how its laid out. I know thats no good for actuall experience but just to see what it looks like :)

Do i need a GB sticker in my back window as i dont have a euro badge on number plate?

VitruvianJ 09 April 2013 01:37 AM

Yes to GB sticker, usually just magnetic so stick on bootlid.

As above make sure your brakes are good and if new pads, wear them in before you get on the ring!

Locals can be crazy so watch your mirrors. One if the worst things to do us think you've remembered the track and get over excited.

I ran AD08's last year, probably going for same this year.

The nearby town of Cochem am Mosel is pretty nice but the roads/scenery on route are awesome.

Oh yes deffo !
I live here and drive to Germnay each week (400 km trip) to fill my Impreza up
Why shouldn't you fill up here ?

BlueBugEye 09 April 2013 07:02 AM

At least 3 of us have seen greatly increased knock after using fuel purchased in Belgium, all on different trips.

Blocks85 10 April 2013 10:51 PM

I hit up 3 tanks of 102 in adenau when there at Easter.
Cheers
