is the type r 2door worth re-shelling?
hi i own a 2000 turbo wrx
its got a good list of mods, at the moment its 340bhp with 360ft tq its a maroon red colour and i hate it. (the colour) ive actually got a 2door sonic blue version 5 type r sat their. question is about the performance, the main reason i would do this is because of the weight, is it worth all that work just to save a little weight? whats the other advantages of having the 2door shell? whats the actual weight difference between a -uk turbo 2000 version 6 and -a JDM sti version 4 type r (2door) |
Would you not want to have the close ratio gearbox and DCCD from the Type R? Or is it just a shell?
|
Oh no, my current version 6 Subaru has the 6speed dccd from the wr1, I'd want to use that

Yeah that's the one, I bought it of him about 1 or 2months ago
|
The UK classics were not WRX, that was something reserved for the JDM only.
Weight wise there isn't much in it, and if weight saving is what your looking for then I can see no point. Its an awful lot of work to swap shells when in reality you'll save just a few KG. It would be easier to strip your car down and add a few lightweight parts. I got my 4 door down to 1150kg very easily without adding things like carbo or perspex. However, a sonic blue type R is a far far more desirable car than a red UK classic. Its a much better looking car and with your decent spec and box would be fantastic. I say go for it, I would !!! |
Hmmm I've been readin up on specs and the the type r seems to be about 70kg lighter than the turbo 2000 uk one, even if I was to re shell then remove some more weight the way you are saying then I'd save a lot more in the long run
Doing the mechanical side isn't a problem, I own a garage but we specialise in building hondas, these are our first set of subarus and I'm getting to kinda like them lol I've got another engine that I bought recently, 2.5 engine (but with this spec it's about a 2.6-2.7 apparently) 100mm darton sleeves 100mm mahle forged pistons Mahle forged I beam rods Reinforced deck Nitrated crank 14mm rodgerclark headstuds Acl race bearing Im gona finish this of and put it into the sonic blue type r! The type r has tein coilovers, White speedline lightweight alloys and 33k on the clock Should be good What box has better ratios? The 5speed type r or the 6speed dccd from wr1? |
Depends what you deem as 'better'. 5 ratio Type R box has shorter ratios, 6 speed box is stronger.
|
plans are to run no more than 500bhp, prob even less, i just want it to be strong, reliable and responsive,
would the 5speed be enough to run that? |
You'll need the 6 speed buddy.
5 speed is great upto about 350. |

Not the standard 5 speed, no.
If you are looking into that power the 6 speed would be the best bet. EDIT: Damn Ninjas. |
If you you don't reshell what will you do with the blue type R?
|
crewj - hmm ok, so what power does the type r 5 speed dccd gearbox handle up to?
riiidaa - dont know if i dont reshell then id prob just put it back on road and sell it, but most likely im going to use it. |

v5 box is meant to be the strongest of the classics. i`m running 400hp on a v4 box, some can handle it some cant.
|
Type r all day, but i would say that,:D.
Personally 300/350bhp is plenty in a type r if your only using it for the road, especially if your not used to the way they drive, i also won't be changing the box in mine as it's all part of the soul of the car and i think you'll lose the essence of what they are about, but i'm not interested in the drag strip or being the fastest guy at a track day, mine is purely for bend to bend B road blasting and the thrills I get from that, with the odd track day so i can be a bit of a loon. The only box i'd consider other than the standard is a JDM 6 speed as they are also close ratio, and that would be after all other avenues had been exhausted. |
As Stedee says, I'd be wary of running 400bhp. 350bhp should be safe though.
