JDM what are they all about

As the title says its basically asking whats the difference? I know they are a import and produce a different noise etc. But are they noiser? same cost to tax & insure? And do they need to run on certain fuel?

People are putting me off spending the finance companies well earned money ;) on buying a 2.5 due to them going pop.

**jay** 04 April 2013 09:13 PM

Stronger 2l engine
Twin scroll
Big valve heads
Rev harder 8k
i/c auto man spray
Stiffer suspension
dccd before 2005 unlike the uk on sti
Rear wash wipe
Light weight bonnet
and probably loads more that ive forgot lol
Yeh usually a bit more to insure but cheaper to tax

stugsey 04 April 2013 09:21 PM

and much better than the 2.5's

It's a hard comparison. Comparing the newest version of each engine in stock form, they make about the same hp, but the 2.0l makes a little more torque (you read that right). They even make peak hp and peak tq at about the same points in the rpm range. The thing is they get better fuel in Japan so the 2.0l ej207 probably won't put down the same numbers in stock form with 91/93 octane fuel.

Assuming the ej207 has big port heads and the subaru twin scroll turbo setup, it should be a good match to the ej257 at stage 2 power levels, probably a little better. Here's what basically happens with both engines at stage 2 power levels.

ej257:
Peak tq. and peak hp. will get moved to the left in the rpm range compared to stock. You'll get a good bump in hp, but a larger bump in tq.

ej207:
Peak tq. will get moved to the left and peak hp. will get moved to right in the rpm range compared to stock. You'll get a good bump in tq., but a larger bump in hp.

Edit: v.8 and up jdm standard sti's all had big port heads and a ts turbo, but no forged piston. v.7 and some of the prior models had forged pistons, but they didn't all have ts scroll turbo or big port heads, that was reserved for the spec c. Those features might have been available as options on the standard v.7 sti.

Generally in better condition as well. Never seen salt. The overall condition of all vehicles in Japan is outstanding (even work vans/trucks etc). JDM bonus points too! Haha.

wrx9181 05 April 2013 05:57 AM

Plus all the specials are jdm
All classic wrx and sti s
Then your ra s type r etc
Modern s201/2/3/4 etc
Spec c . Spec c ra . Rar. Plus all jdm sti s that have higher rev limit and twin scroll

MattyB1983 05 April 2013 09:36 AM

The JDM cars are better, simple as that.
However, I much prefer the feel of a single scroll turbo over a twin.

Peedee 05 April 2013 10:15 AM

As above, but also has the following over uk models (talking about a blobeye jdm)

Red dials with sweep startup and shift indicator light
Shorter ratio 5th and 6th gears

The JDM isnt for everone, but I love it. Only thing im not keen on is at 70mph, in 6th gear, its pushing over 3000rpm.....not good for petrol consumption! I stick to 60-65mph on motorways.

Also, JDM's are 10x quicker than UK models, known fact :thumb:

You say you prefer the single scroll.

Terminator X 05 April 2013 09:26 PM

Same year for same year the jdm is the better car certainly for the older cars. As you get close to today the uk cars are pretty similar bar engine size eg the old spec c's were vastly superior to the uk sti but as a hawkeye both were pretty much the same.

TX.

Oh I do chap but the only car in your list id entertain is the P1, and even then I would take a type r over it.

Spec C or RA? You don't have to wear earmuffs and put a cushion under your ass in an RB320 or Cosworth.

The S204 is certainly comparable in terms of ambience, very nice car indeed. A lot more sorted and quicker round a track than an RB320 I would seek one ahead of the Prodrive car but they're a bit hard to come by!

Don't get me wrong, the RB is a fabulous looking car it really is. Its just not a car id pay the premium for that it demands. Im not a fan of the twin scroll (I did have a 2005 jdm sti briefly) but given the choice of an RB320 or spec C then I'd just have to get used to the linear power delivery that the twin scroll provides.

Who on earth buys an impreza based on its soft ride and quiet sound track ???
Its a drivers car.

Fully agreed. Like people who come on here and ask about fuel consumption!!

thenewgalaxy 05 April 2013 11:56 PM

I bought all my Subarus for their plush ride and excellent fuel consumption!

Come on seriously :brickwall

Are you telling me that the sole purpose of owning any car is pure driver pleasure? If so you made the wrong choice with an Impreza to be quite honest with you.

I ran a Hawk with RE070s and eventually modified suspension and it sucked majorly for it. And made bugger all difference unless I was absolutely nailing it and far exceeding the speed limit.

There's a world of difference between something that is performance orientated - I'd say my car is certainly that even when it was totally stock - and a car with plastic windows and no soundproofing aimed at performance with little compromise.

Yep another ridiculous topic. Fuel consumption, noise level, comfort....... think you need a diesel BMW.....:thumb:

thenewgalaxy 06 April 2013 12:08 AM

Would rather boil my head than own a diesel BMW. Don't have a Bluetooth headset anyway.

Wife has been putting pressure on me to get something a bit more sensible for longer journeys e.g. Kent or Scotland.

About as soft and sensible as I'm going is a Legacy Spec B. Manual!

As Matty said, who wants them,I would choose over P1 Type R everyday

If New age R205 or Spec C(new JDM saloon/sedan MY12 growing on me) is my choice

Something tells me you have never actually driven an RB. If you had you would know its charms are not just in its looks.

i have and i really like the drive, im with matty on the jdm twin scroll cars too, i dont like the power delivery or the fact it doesnt have the subaru burble.

i dont think its worth the extra money it demands but its a lovely looking car but if i had the choice of the spec c hawk or the rb320 im afraid id go spec c.

spec C is a great car no doubt and probably one of the best out the box subaru have made. Finding one could be a problem and its rawness in some areas may not be to everyone's liking.
My only issue was with people making "informed" opinions on some models without even sitting in one, let alone driving one or living with it for a while.
