330mm godspeed ap racing discs alternative?

Now, I'm not one to scrimp and save and I also believe that you get what you pay for BUT.....
The discs on my Type R are warped and I'm in need of replacements. They're AP calipers (not sure if that makes much difference) but fundamentally they're 330mm conversions. Converted by Godspeed (from what I can assume from the website this means they's got extenders on the calipers). Godspeed website are selling discs for £350ish. Seems a bit steep to me, are there any others out here that will fit?
Always been against skimming discs but I might consider it at that price lol
Just before some of the usual bunch start, I did search this and even googled it to death :)
Many thanks,
Paul.

You'll be hard pressed to beat Ian's prices as a rule.

are you 100% percent sure the brake disc are warped?,have you had them professionally checked?it could just be pad deposits on the brake disc.SJ.

Godspeed Brakes 31 March 2013 10:29 AM

Hi
It could be pad deposits or it could be a rust build up between the disc and bell , remove the bells off the discs and thoroughly clean them of any rust or brake dust , anything stopping the bells being a good clean fit on the discs will end up them running out of true.

Depending on what it fitted on there , if its one of our designed kits then only our discs will fit , £349 might seem expensive to you but are about the most keenly priced rotors available , if you have our discs that have been made to fit ap bells , then you can buy either AP or performance friction discs to fit but will be closer to £500 a pair for them , we also sell these.
So ours at £349 are starting to look more attractive , you also get a guarantee with ours , you don't with AP or PF , and yes these can warp as we have skimmed plenty of them in the past.

As for skimming yours to true them up if they are running out , this will cause no issues doing them if they are warped and there is enough thickness left on them , and it will true them back up.

Hope this helps
Cheers Ian

If the kit is the same as the AP CP5200 4pot caliper then this is the cheapest you will find 3rd one down

Sorry to hijack the thread guys but Ian, how much thickness must be left on the disc to warrant skimming ?

matscooby 31 March 2013 06:03 PM

Dont worry about the question Ian, I bought the 335mm conversion kit from you afew years ago which was 32mm wide, just measured the thickness now and they are about 29.5mm so I'll replace discs and pads shortly.

Ah, nice one, I'll whip them off this weekend and have a look and possibly a bit of a clean. Will it simply be a wire brush and WD40 or is a specific brake cleaner more appropriate?
They are indeed CP5200s and they were only fitted in Feb '12 so I can't imagine there'd be too much wrong with them.
Thanks for all the help guys :notworthy
Paul.

build was done at 33300 miles so maybe the disc's and pads have 3800 miles u'l need to check the mileage yourself. take godspeed up on his guarantee you have receipt

I bought the Performance friction ones for mine from AS Performance and they were about £480 but that was over a year ago,

These guys are quite huge in Ford scene for more than 15 years...

AS Performance 09 April 2013 09:05 AM

all comes down to the quality of the casting, material and accuracy of machining........

we do high quality 2piece PFC, Brembo, AP Racing, etc. and also a more wallet friendly "pattern" race rotor BUT they are all proper "directional vane" discs......

looking at the above options they are very low cost "straight vane" discs almost as if they should be "single piece"??

Godspeed Brakes 09 April 2013 10:00 AM

And what exactly does directional vane discs do that straight don't ?

The only benefit I can see over the two types is if you have ducting from the bumper going to the back centre of the disc , and then a cowling covering the back of the disc fully encasing it to stop any of the airflow you get from driving the car , if you do not have this , then does anyone think that the wind blowing past the discs at say 70mph is going to be sucked into the discs more because they have curved vanes ??

I can't see it.

I have just bought a wind speed gauge and will be testing some discs all at the same speed turning on my lathe and see the difference in air speed being expelled out of the outer radius of the discs to see what difference if any between a straight and curved vane disc

Ian I need a replacement set of disks for your 330mm AP kit, are the bells standard AP PCD or a custom fit and also what thickness?

Also can you let me know what Calipers were supplied with the kit and if they can take larger disks if the mounts are changed?

Hi
I would have thought you have the CP6600 4 pot caliper as this is the one we chose because of the better dust sealing , and they also use a wider pad , if its these , you can email me a photo to confirm , then no the 330mm AP discs won't fit as there isn't enough width on the disc to take the larger pad.

If you are using the CP6600 caliper , then these can take a 355mm disc , you would need new bells to go with them , but you can retain the brackets and fit a spacer between the caliper and bracket

Cheers Ian

Hi
Yes they are the 6600 calipers are run a wider pad
Cheers Ian

I'll be in touch!

AS Performance 09 April 2013 09:11 PM

the "curved" vane does far more than simply pull cooling air through the rotor...............

due to its more race intended use it enables the disc to be far more temperature stable/efficient BUT it also an important structural aspect that enables the rotor to be less prone to distortion in extreme scenarios

if it was as easy as bolting 2x bin lids together i'm sure that PFC, AP Racing, etc. wouldn't bother investing so much time and effort in continued R&D :norty:

Godspeed Brakes 10 April 2013 08:37 AM

I tested a 335mm straight and curved vane disc yesterday and had more air being expelled out of the straight vane disc !
The straight vane disc had a reading of 9.7 kph and the curved vane disc was 8.7 kph , have plenty of more discs to test but so far I would say that there is no argument to say that the curved vane discs do run cooler , therefore it won't be more temperature stable and efficient.

Yes there will be extra strength in the disc with a curved vane as the vanes are longer and spread more over the disc , but on say AP discs you could say they would need this as the inner and outer sections of the discs are thinner than our 330mm discs so would need the extra strength .

There are arguments for and against both disc types , and its not as straight forward as some will have you believe , I find it funny that some will try and put down a straight vane disc and that curved vane discs are far superior , in my opinion they are not ! if they were all road cars would have them , especially high performance ones , as it would cost no more to make them on a large scale.

When I have time i'll do some more testing , and will include some AP and PF discs to see how they compare

Godspeed Brakes 10 April 2013 09:10 AM

As a quick comparison I just checked the airspeed through some standard discs

Mit Evo fronts were 6.9kph
STi brembo fronts were 7kph
294mm WRX discs are 3.8kph

Both the EVO and STi front discs run a staggered vane not straight or curved which is showing them to be worst of the bunch
