04 STI dashlights dim

Just picked up the Sti and drove in the dark, the light around the rev counter after 5k is very dim as well as the speedo at 40 mph is there a fix?

Regards.

change the bulb in the back of the cluster

Turn the stalk on the left so that it points to bright

this only dims the digital readouts for mileage etc and has no effect on the speedo, it needs the bulb replacing

Right hand side of the steering wheel there's the heater vent and just below it are three switches. One is a roller switch that dims the bulbs on the dash and speedo. It could be set lower than it can go. Would try that before pulling the dash apart

thats to dip the headlights if you have passengers in it

if you look at the plastic surround there are 2 screws remove these and it will come off, there are 4 screws that hold the cluster in, remove these and it will pull forward.
then you need to undo multiplug and the cluster will come out.
the bulb holders are very obvious from the rear just twist and pull and the bulbs will come out.

Ok well not on my 330s and my new saloon. It does the dash lights. Thought that counts I guess:lol1:

Thanks guys, i am waiting for tubbytommy to get back to me as this .is another thing causing me negative feelings to the car. Only had car for 1 day.

stevie1982 30 March 2013 04:34 PM

Dude its a second hand car. Not sure what you were expecting but a popped bulb in the dash that was there when you test drove the car is hardly the end of the dream and love for a car.

Is what it is mate.

Go out, drive it and build the bond :thumb:

Changed my dash bulbs today , if local motor factors dont have them , Halfords will (£2 each though ! ) get 5 off 2.3watt for the main dials , 1.2watt is fine for others. Clear will be brighter , but green look more uniform (Halfords wont have them though)

Its a 10 minute job. 2 screws at top of cowling and it pulls off to reveal 3screws holding cluster on . Unplug 3 wiring plugs and the bulbs twist out. Pull the glass bulb away from the plastic lampholder and replace with new ones (bend the wee wires on the glass out a bit to ensure contact) . Plug wires back in a test all (indicators , high beam etc) and try it in a dark area to ensure it all works before screwing it all together.

Thanks for all the advice, i understand. Took it to tubbytommy and i was surprised how easy it was, even an idiot like myself could do it.

Thanks tubbytommy, you really saved me and the halfords 1.2w was perfect, i can now see the revs needle approach 5k and my speed needle between 30 and 50.

Regards.
