This is my garage floor -

I want to paint it a grey colour can I just paint straight on to this finish? What paint would you use? :thumb:

You should clean and degrease it first seal it ,then just use a good quality floor paint.

Floor paint. of course. :D

I've used "international" branded stuff (soem company as Sikens etc.) and its worn very well (needs doing again now).

As for painting, remove all flaking material and treat any bare patches with a concrete sealer (I've used watered down PVA in the past). The painted areas don't need sealing but should be sanded a little to give a better key, this will help prevent any pealing: wire wool, wire brush or course sandpaper, whatever works best for you.

Then clean. Remove all dust (I used the vacuum cleaner :o ), and degrease any oil patches with a solvent - spirits, or brake cleaner etc.

I'd give it a few days to dry, and if you have to park teh car in there, park the car on some floor mats or carpet tiles (I use some old carpet samples), as otherwise the paint will peal off onto the tyres...ever after a few weeks!

I have given up with floor paint! really you need to remove the old paint (sand blast etc)

Yep , got paint on tyres too , didnt seal bare concrete but did hoover 1st and thinned 1st coat of grey paint as per instructions. Left for 2weeks to dry but still lifted off when i parked on it. Re-painted the patches and left another 2 weeks but no different. Gave up in the end and put carpet down ! Always said i would give it another go as its handy for brushing up and moping etc but find in the snowy weather the carpet soakes up the melted stuff from underneath . 2years ago the floor (and anything sitting on it) was soaked from melted snow.

Floor paint is rubbish, it always lifts regardless of how you prep it. I put resin floor down in mine and it ain't budged. Was hard work but worth it. The second coat is going down in the summer. Get it from watch but make sure you prep it properly

Yeah, if the old paint was painted on unsealed concrete without any priming/sealing, it will have to be removed as it will definetly flake and peal, as will any any further coats put on top of seemlingly sound paint.

Some paints aren't compatitble with certain types of sealer or previous coatings (its even worse now with modern low VOC paints :mad: ). So always download the technical data sheet off the manufacturer's website before buying and applying. Get it wrong or use the wrong stuff and it will peal.

Why don't you use bituminum like they use in houses with solid floors, I think they call it limmer. Nice smooth finish and will also keep out the damp.

Many years ago, i had a car serviced at an autobox specialists, there floor was blue, on enquiring as to why, they said lost nuts and bolts stood out a mile when dropped onto the floor, and being that they needed to ensure that no contaminants were reintroduced to the autoboxes they were servicing

How do you find them? I've got planning in for a double garage just now and have been looking a a few different website for floor tiles.

I was in Costco yesterday and seen big sheets of rubber matting for garage floors for about £120(ish). Not sure how many you would need for a garage floor but it looked quite robust stuff at a glance..
