Ebay would still be a good place, although the robbing barstewards charge for listing and then a final sellers fee upto 25% of the final selling price :(. Recently sold some old PCs on there. Used the bidding option and started off at a low 99p bid on a job lot of old P4 and AMD Athlon tower systems. Managed to get over £60 for them, then you have to take in the final fees etc.. which means you wont make much money in the long run, but better than taking it to your local scrap yard.
Know what you mean about buyers though. Was selling a Shuttle XPC computer on Ebay a couple of months ago, final bidder was an old couple, which turned out they were bidding on my item as another PC they ordered looked like it wasn't going to turn up on time, and then they backed out of the auction. Had to re-list and put in a case to reclaim the final sellers fees on the first time around (You must do this as Ebay will debit your account even it didn't sell :( ), after that I have been lucky.
