Now this one is interesting (in a stiflingly boring could only be TelBoy sort of way). If they didn't apostrophise it, the word would be Pates, and technically, that's a "correct" word. So the only way to differentiate between pates plural and lots of pate is with an apostrophe, or another grammatical mark yet to be invented :norty: Inconclusive, i'd say.

An acute accent above the e would remove that doubt. Patés. :)

TelBoy 26 February 2013 03:03 PM

True :D Maybe that's what they intended when they sent it to the signwriters :Suspiciou

WRXBOB 26 February 2013 10:47 PM

There is no plural for pate. The same as there is no plural for sheep.

This is the only correct and sensible reply in this thread!

dpb 26 February 2013 11:21 PM

They do grammar schools as well as dips.

Ah, the good old SN spelling police.

f1_fan 27 February 2013 10:17 AM

There's no excuse for it on professional signage, none whatsoever.

It shows a slapdash and lackadaisical attitude which I can only assume will be present in other aspects of their business. I will go elsewhere thanks.

But sheep is the collective term for "iPhone Owners" ;)

ALi-B 27 February 2013 01:35 PM

It gets worse...even the websites for other dealerships have cocked it up:

There certainly is a plural for pate. It's pates. Whether there's a plural for paté is harder to determine, given there's no established rule in English for a French word.

ALi-B 27 February 2013 01:39 PM

What is a pate anyway?

(I know what paté is ;) )

TelBoy 27 February 2013 01:45 PM

It's got various meanings in the OED, and it doesn't seem to be commonly used these days. The head is probably the most succinct definition amongst them.

douglasb 27 February 2013 05:26 PM

Tel, while there is no established rule in English for the plural of a French word, in my distant memories of O Level French I seem to recall that les grenouilles also add an s to a singular noun to make the plural (there are exceptions). Thus le paté becomes les patés in French. That's good enough for moi. ;)

i like that m8, made me larf

Not in English it isn't. There is a rule, its a French word, thus there is no English plural equivalent, because, that's right it isn't an English word

And its spelt Pâté in French, don't forget the chapeau!

TelBoy 27 February 2013 07:28 PM

Don't understand your point :Suspiciou

So when somebody serves canapés at a dinner party, are they just one step from insanity?

You DO realise i'm differentiating between pate and paté (without the circumflex cos i can't remember how to do it)? It's just your comment "not in English it isn't" doesn't really fit in :Suspiciou

bioforger 27 February 2013 07:32 PM

What pate as in the crown/top of a person's head? that pate? oooooooh I see ok then :)

TelBoy 27 February 2013 07:33 PM

By Jove i think he's got it :D

bioforger 27 February 2013 07:35 PM

doh :D
