What engine oil for my 05 sti
 

Hi guys,I'm a newbie to the Scooby scene & have had many different opinions on what oil I should be using. I purchased the car with a receipt that indicated its previously been running on Mobil 15w50 although iv been told this oil is now discontinued. Iv asked a cpl of specialists although they both differ in opinion,one recommends 10w 60 another 10w 40 & if I do a search a lot say the recommended oil is 5w 30 & that the 15w 50 is too thick for what the cars used for. I'm totally mixed up now so wondered if you guys could shed some light on the subject.
The cars had a ecutek remap to 332bhp
Vortex Exhaust system
Turbo smart dump valve
K&n panel filter
It doesn't get tracked just the usual B road blasts.

I would not recommend Mobil oils for anyone.. I broke one tuned wrx engine for running with mobil 1 oils.. Poor lubrication when engine gets used hard.

I use Motul 300v 10w40 in my 05 STI. Motul oils are above existing standards

If Motul is a bit too expensive in your opinion. Castrol edge 10w40 is allso very good alternative

Won't go wrong with millers, motul, Fuchs, redline all offer different grades, I run 10/60 in mine which again has mixed reviews, but its what the car was run on when I bought it and I have just kept it the same tbh, you are going to have so many different opinions for that question your more than likely going to get a headache :lol1: just do a search on oil advice in the search function at top and you will see what I mean ;)

If its for everyday road use with a little spirited driving then a 10/40 will be fine, something like millers cfs is a good bet, if you enjoy using the loud pedal like me when you get the chance then maybe go up a grade to 10/50, my car has been running 10/60 for years now and has not had a prob either but it will sap a little (minimal) power from your engine, but when I go for a "proper" drive then the car gets used hard with plenty of WOT, so whats in my head is the 10/60 is better suited for me, so its going to be down to personal choice, if you know your car is running a 15/50 then stick to that for piece of mind if you start getting baffled :confused: :thumb:

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition.

15w-50 is not an ideal choice - it's really thick when cold, so little cold start protection and also thick when hot, so won't flow as well as it could.

Thanks guys,your probably right i had the head ache before I came here for advice,now comes the migraine. Am I better with a full synth rather than a semi synth? Only ask because I know a guy with a 04 sti running approx 450bhp & he uses 10-40 semi & changes his oil every 3 months & in 3 yrs has never had any engine failures.

Go for a synthetic, they give much better protection and last longer. 3 years without an engine failure isn't exactly anything special. The amount of cheap oil he's used would have cost more money and effort than using a good oil and changing it less often.

Hi oilman, thanks for your reply.iv heard your the oil godfather, my Scooby is a 05 sti ecutek remap 332bhp.

In that case, definitely a good synthetic 5w-40 is the right option.

The best ones are the Gulf Competition, Motul 300V, Redline and Millers CFS. As a cheaper alternative the Fuchs XTR, Shell HX7, Motul 6100 and Millers XSS are good choices.

I run 10/60 Millers as per my engine builders recommendation and all is good.
